them, "It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born."

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me." And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." d

32. JESUS IN GETHSEMANE.

AND when they had sung an hymn of praise, (Psalms cxv. to cxvii.,) according to the custom at the passover, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And on the way Jesus said to his disciples, "All shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee." Peter answered and said unto him, 66 Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended." Jesus said unto him, "Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice." Peter said unto him, “Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee." Likewise also said all the disciples.

Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, (which means oil-press,) situated on the other side of the brook Kedron, on the Mount of Olives. And he said to his disciples, "Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder." And he took with him Peter, and James, and John, and he began to be sorrowful and very heavy. Then saith he unto them, " My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me." And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, "O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt." And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, "What! could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch, and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is

willing, but the flesh is weak." He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, "O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done." And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy. And he left them, and went away

again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, and said unto them, "Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going. Behold, he is at hand that doth betray me." a

33. THE APPREHENSION OF JESUS.-PETER'S

DENIAL.

JUDAS ISCARIOT had promised the chief priests of the Jews that he would deliver Jesus into their hands, and they paid him for this thirty pieces of silver. As Judas knew that Jesus often went to Gethsemane, he led thither the company of men whom the chief priests and the elders had sent against Jesus, armed with swords and staves. Judas had given them a sign, saying, "Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he take him, and lead him away safely." So when he found Jesus, he

went up to him, and said, " Hail, Master," and kissed him. Jesus said to him, "Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" When they that were about him saw what would follow, they said to him," Lord, shall we smite with the sword ?" And Peter, without waiting for Jesus' answer, drew his sword, and smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Then said Jesus to Peter, "Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father giveth me, shall I not drink it?" And he touched his ear, and healed it. And when the disciples of Jesus saw that he offered no resistance, they all forsook him and fled. And there was a young man, probably the evangelist Mark, who followed Jesus, who was clothed with a linen garment over his naked body, and the officers laid hold of him. But he left the linen garment, and fled from them naked. a

Jesus was then led to the high priest; and the whole Council was assembled together. But Peter, who remembered his promise not to forsake his master, followed him, at a distance, to the high priest's palace. And he went in and sat with the servants, and warmed himself at a fire of coals, waiting to see how it would end. Then came one of the maids of the high priest; and after looking narrowly at Peter, she said to him, "Thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth." But he denied, saying, "I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest." And he went out into the outer court; and the cock crew. But Peter appears not to have noticed it. And the maid saw him again,

and began to say to those that stood by, "This is one of them." And he denied it again. And a little while after, those that stood by said to Peter, 'Surely thou art one of them; for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto." But he began to curse and to swear, saying, "I know not this man of whom ye speak." And the cock crew the second time. Then Jesus turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said unto him. And he went out, and wept bitterly. b

34. JESUS BEFORE CAIAPHAS.

In the mean time Jesus was standing before the high priest Caiaphas. He asked him of his disciples, and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him, "I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said." And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Answerest thou the high priest so?" answered him, "If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?"

And the chief priests and all the council and the elders sought witnesses against Jesus, to put him to death; but found none. Many indeed gave
