into the air, (Satan's dominion, Eph. ii. 2.) and there came a great voice out of the temple of hea ven, from the throne of God, saying, It is done. (Rev. xi. 15.) 18. And there were voices, thunders, and lightnings; and a great earthquake, such and so great (a revolution,) was not since men were upon the earth. 19. And the great city (the Romish dominion) was divided into three parts, (at variance with each other), and the cities of the nations fell off from it: and great (papal) Babylon was remembred before God, to give her the cup of the wine of his fierce wrath. 20. And every island fled away (from supporting it), and the mighty (as mountains) were not found.

21. And there came upon men a great (war as) hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of this plague, for it was exceeding great.

CHAP. XVII.

A WOMAN ARRAYED IN SCARLET.

THERE came to me one of the seven angels who had the seven vials, and spake with me, saying, Come, I will shew thee the judgment of the great (popish) harlot that sits on many waters (or nations), 2. With whom the kings of the earth have committed (idolatry, or spiritual) fornication, and the earth's inhabitants have been made drunk with the (stupifying wine) of her idolatrous whoredom.

3. So he carried me away in a vision of the Spirit into the wilderness and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured (bloody savage) beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns (xii. 3.) 4. She and her beast was arrayed in (bloody) purple, scarlet-colour, and decked with gold, precious stones, and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of abominations and pollutions of her whoredom. 5. And on her forehead was her name written, MYSTERY, (POPISH) BABYLON THE

GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS, AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6. And I saw her drunk with the blood of the saints, even the martyrs of Jesus; and, beholding her, I wondered with great amazement. 7. Then the angel said to me, Why didst thou wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, (or the city), and of the beast, (or the empire) that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. 8. The beast thou formerly sawest was, and is not for a little; and shall ascend again out of the deep pit, and go into perdition; and they that dwell on the earth whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, shall wonder when they behold the beast that was, and is not, (being extinct for a little) and yet again is (in dominion and power.) 9. And here is a trial of the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the (city or) woman sitteth. 10. And they are seven kings, (or, forms of government); five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he comes, he must continue a short space. 11. And the beast that was, and is not (in dominion and power) for a little, is the eighth; and is as one of the seven, and goeth into perdi tion. 12. And the ten horns which thou sawest, are ten kings (or kingdoms, or divisions of the western empire) which have not received their dominion as yet, but will receive power as kings at the same time with the beast. 13. These have one (popish) mind, and shall give their own power and authority to the beast. 14. They shall make war with the Lamb, but he shall overcome them; for he is the Lord of lords, and King of kings; and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

15. He said also to me, The waters which thou sawest, whereon the harlot sits, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues. 16. And the ten 4 E

horns which thou sawest on the (savage) beast, shall hate the harlot, and make her desolate and naked, and eat her (revenues as) flesh, and burn her (city) with fire. 17. For God will leave it to their hearts to agree, and fulfil his will, to give their kingdoms to the beast, until God's words be fulfilled. 18. The woman also which thou sawest is that great city (Rome) which reigns over the kings of the earth.

CHAP. XVIII.

THE FALL OF BABYLON.

Now, after these things, I saw another angel descend from heaven, having great authority; and the earth was enlightened with his glory. 2. And he cried aloud mightily, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, it is fallen, and is become the habitation of demons, and the haunt of every unclean spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. 3. Because all nations have drunk of the wine of her raging whoredom; and the kings of the earth have committed spiritual whoredom with her, and the (ecclesiastic) merchants of the earth are waxed rich thro' the abundance of her luxuries, (by selling indulgencies, and absolutions or pardons).

4. I heard also another voice from heaven, say. ing, Come out of her, my people, and partake not of her sins, that ye may not receive of her plagues; 5. For the cry of her sins hath reached heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. 6. Render to her even as she hath done to you; yea, recompense to her double, according to her works; in the cup which she hath filled, fill to her double. 7. As much as she made a shew of her glory, and lived in luxury, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she said in her heart, I sit as a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. 8. Therefore her plagues shall come in one day, mourning, and famine, and pestilence, and she shall be utterly burn

ed with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

9. And the remaining kings of the earth, who committed idolatrous fornication, and lived luxuriously with her, shall bewail and lament her, when they see the smoke of her burning, 10. Standing afar off, for fear of her torments, saying, Alas, alas! O great city! O mighty Babylon! for thy judgment is come in one hour. 11. And the (ecclesiastic) merchants of the earth shall wail and mourn over her; for none buyeth their (indulgence) wares any more. 12. The merchandise of gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet, all odoriferous wood, and all kinds of vessels of ivory, of most precious wood, of brass, iron, marble, 13. And cinnamon, perfumes, myrrh, incense, ointments, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, beeves, sheep, horses, chariots, slaves, and souls or persons of men (ruined thereby). 14. And the fruits thy soul desired, with all things delicious and splendid, are departed from thee, and thou shalt obtain them no more at all.

15. The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, shall stand afar off, for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing. 16. And saying, Alas, alas! the great city, that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls! 17. In one hour all these riches are destroyed. And every pilot, with all the ship's crew of mariners, and whoever trade by sea, stood afar off, 18. And cried, when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like the great city! 19. And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas! the great city, whereby all that had ships on the sea were made rich with her magnificent expences! but in one hour she is destroyed.

20. Rejoice over her, thou (just avenging) heaven, and ye saints, apostles, and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her, (Psalm lviii. 10.)

21. Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and hurled it violently into the sea, saying, Thus shall the great city Babylon be demolished, and found no more. 22. And the sound of harpers, musicians, pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman of any trade, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; 28. And the light of a lamp shall shine no more in thee, and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more in thee, tho thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

24. And in her was found the blood of prophets, of saints, and of all that were slain on the earth.

CHAP. XIX.

GOD PRAISED FOR JUDGING THE HARLOT.

Now, after these things I heard the voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, Praise the Lord; Salvation, glory, honour, and power, (be ascribed) to the Lord our God. 2. For true and righteous are his judgments; for he hath judged the great harlot, who corrupted the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged his servants blood shed by her.

3. They said again, Praise the Lord. And the smoke (of her torment) rose up for ever and ever. 4. And the twenty-four ancients, with the four living creatures fell down and worshipped God who sat on the throne, saying, Amen; ÃÎleluia.

5. Then a voice came from the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, ye that fear him, both small and great. 6. I heard also, as it were the voice of a great multitude, even like the sound of many waters, and of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns. 7. We rejoice, and are glad, and give glo ry to him, for the Lamb's marriage (with the Jewish nation, by embracing the gospel) is come, and
