Mr. Robertson's b. c. Little Wonder, by Muley, out of Lacerta (Macdonald) Sir G. Heathcote's b. c. Sophocles, by Laurel-Bertha (Buckle) Capt. Gardnor's ch. c. Monops, by Actæon, out of Wings (Wakefield) Sir G. Heathcote's b. c. Bokhara, by Samarcand-Zenobia (Chapple) Lord Orford's c., by Clearwell, out of Angelica (Connelly) Betting: 9 to 4 agst. Launcelot, 4 to 1 agst. Assassin (tk.), 4 to 1 agst. Melody (tk.), 6 to 1 agst. Theon (tk.), 20 to 1 agst. Forth's two (tk.), 20 to 1 agst. Pathfinder, 20 to 1 agst. Scutari (tk.), 20 to 1 agst. Bokhara (tk.), 30 to 1 agst. Solace (tk.), 30 to 1 agst. Confederate (tk.), 40 to 1 agst. Gift (tk.), 40 to 1 agst. Angelica (tk.), 50 to 1 agst. Little Wonder (tk.), 1,000 to 15 agst. Muley Ishmael (tk.); 6 to 4 was laid on Forth's two agst. Scutari. Although there was but one actual false start, much time was lost, and annoyance caused, by the difficulty of getting the jockeys behind the post. After full three quarters of an hour had been thus consumed in manoeuvering, the start was admirably effected, the Angelica colt jumping off in front, as hard as he could split, the three favourites next him, and a good account of all the others; the rear rank consisting of Sophocles, the Gift colt, Theon, and Muley. The tailing, which from the first hundred yards was sufficiently marked, became awfully manifest as the lot rounded the turn at the top of the hill; and here the first important change occurred among the leaders. Angelica had shot his bolt, and fell to the third place; the Melody colt, ridden with great care and firmness, by young John Day, taking up the running, with Launcelot alongside; Confederate and Little Wonder close in their wake. As they rounded Tattenham Corner, Melody was still in front, with Launcelot at his haunches; but Little Wonder and Confederate had both passed Assassin, the former hugging the rails, looking like a winner, and nothing else. As they crossed the road, it was evident that the race lay among the first three; Confederate and Assassin were choked off, and of the others there was a truly beggarly account, Sophocles having already pulled up. From the road to the Stand, Melody and Launcelot contested every inch of ground with great severity, the latter having the best of the struggle by a length. But there was another that had not been an idle spectator of the contest. Little Wonder, from the distance, had been quietly closing his horses at the Stand he was with them; and, from that point, to the chair, beat Launcelot, cleverly, by a length, Melody being two lengths behind the second; Confederate and Assassin, six lengths from the winner, were fourth and fifth; Amurath, sixth; and Muley Ishmael, who was last at Tattenham Corner, seventh. It was certainly a true run-race, if not as fast as some of its predecessors; the length by which many of the horses were beaten off, probably was never exceeded. Value of the stakes, after the deductions, £3,775. |
