Topics for May, 1903

3. The Seventh Commandment.

10. Missionary Work of the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

17. The Eighth Commandment.

24. Luther at the Wartburg.

31. Whitsunday.

Events During May

4. Martin Luther, after he was present at Worms, before the Emperor of Germany, was captured" by his friends and hurried away to a hiding place in Wartburg Castle to save his life (1521). Here he spent ten busy months. 23. On this day perished Savonarola, of Florence, Italy, a distinguished forerunner of the Reformation (1498). His body was burned after he had been strangled, “for misleading the people by false prophecies." Not twenty years later Luther's hammer rang against the church door at Wittenberg.

26, 1521. On this day the "ban" of the Roman Empire was set upon Martin Luther.

28. The Formula of Concord, a peace document, was completed (1577).

The Juniors forever!

Take good care of the Juniors, and the Luther League of the future will take care of the Church.

The Junior Time is the Arbor Day" in the calendar of Church life.

It may be a good plan to change your program of exercises from time to time so as to vary the order.

Have plenty of committees and let all be placed upon these. This will give each one an opportunity to show what he can do.

An occasional "talk" by the pastor (if he cannot be present at every meeting) will prove an excellent help and change that will uplift the hearts of all and keep the pastor in touch with his young people.

The best way to teach our boys and girls to sing is from memory, and without resorting to the hymn book.

Advantage may be found in the use of birthday cards, small favors and special rewards for good conduct.

Interesting stories from the Bible and Church History may be told and re-told from time to time.

Keep the connection strong between the main League and the Juniors.

Badges may be readily and cheaply purchased, and a combination of ribbons of the five League colors may readily be made.

Addresses are sometimes "slow and tedi

ous" things for a League, but an occasional talk of the truest sort, delivered in a happy style by one who understands the nature of the young, may be of great advantage.

Let us not rest satisfied in doing our work in part but as well as we can. If it is the furnishing of the room let us equip it to the fullest extent of our ability. If it is the ingathering of members let the field be well and truly canvassed. If it is the direction of the meeting let it be as delightful and profitable as possible.

A Few Bible Queries

Why is a written Bible better than an equal number of words spoken of God to each person separately?

Do you know any ancient writer who mentions any Bible fact?

What man or men of the Old Testament wrought miracles? What were those miracles?

What was the last miracle of the Old Testament?

Prove, by a miracle wrought, that Jesus has power over the body.

In the same way show His divine power over the mind.

Is the forgiveness of sins a miracle? Had Jesus power over the works of nature? What miracle proves this?

Make your music as good as you can at the meetings.

Work just as you pray.

Be straight and regular as a yardstick in your living, if you can.

Read the Topics, study the facts, mark the chief thoughts, apply them to your own life.

The folly of excusing ourself for failing in one's duty to the House of God and the God of the house is evident upon the face of the act.

LUTHER LEAGUE REVIEW

Can the Central Be Made an Ex

change?

There is no reason why the "Central " could not be made a medium of "Exchange" in League work, as in telephone service, or as a bourse in the world of commerce.

Since one League is exceptionally weak just on a point wherein another is exceptionally strong, why should not the former take advantage of this opportunity to solve the problem by the successful experience of others who have put theory to actual proof? And probably vice versa, that very same League could return the favor of valuable counsel in some other direction.

For instance, one League has discovered the secret of doing splendid Junior work, but fails in making the meetings of its adult members correspondingly interesting. A second League on the other hand is precisely the reverse. If these two could each supplement the other's weakness, and borrow each other's strength, there would be no loss to either, but great gain to both.

Judging by the interest which the Parliament stirred up in old Philadelphia, this "Exchange" will be widely participated in. It will bring many new facts to light, both negative and positive. It will call out an expression on the part of many persons who usually do nothing but sit still and listen. It will substitute 40 or 50 short speeches, very direct and to the point, instead of the one long stereotyped address, and it will prove helpful in a number of ways.

4. Its relation to general public movements for civic righteousness.

5. Study of the weekly Topics.
