« We will not have this man to rule over us. » Popes have often endured great sufferings, not from the people, but from a certain class of Emperors and Kings, statesmen and conspirators. We may yet see Pius IX. as Pius VII. It only requires such another Napoleon to make such another Pius. Or his destiny may be like that of Gregory VII. When that great Pontiff had finished the conflict by which he rescued the Bishops of the Universal Fold from the stifling grasp of the secular power, he died without knowing that he had conquered, and saved the Church. And in his expiring moments he said: « I have loved justice and hated iniquity, and therefore do I die in exile. » And one of his humblest followers, who prayed at his side, exclaimed, « How, my Lord, dost thou say that thou diest in exile? thou art the Vicar of Christ, the universe is open to thee, and the ends of the earth

Parlo di quella immensa moltitudine di veri e leali Cattolici, poichè ben so che nella propria sua casa ha l'uomo i suoi nemici. Ma ovunque visiti il sole co' suoi raggi un'abitazione umana, i Cattolici di ogni tribù, di ogni lingua, di ogni colore muovonsi alla difesa del Papa; e voi, o signore, coi vostri cuori teneri ed affettuosi, e voi, o signori, coi vostri petti virili siete qui venuti ad unire le vostre voci all'universale concerto dei Vescovi, dei Preti e de' laici, i quali qui, come per ogni dove, levano le innumerevoli ed unanimi lor voci per ispaventare i malvagi nelle trame dei loro delitti, per arrestare la sacrilega loro mano, e per proteggere il Padre della Cristianità collo scudo della lor devozione.

Nos Episcopus, Praepositus, et Canonici Ecclesiae Cliftoniensis, cum Clero tam saeculari quam regulari eiusdem Dioecesis ad pedes Sanctitatis Vestrae provolvimur.

Nimio dolore affligimur audientes quot et quanta pericula Ecclesiam undequaque invadunt et Christi Vicarii cor paternum exagitant. Etenim portas inferi, quae semper adversus Sanctam Christi Ecclesiam luctantur, nunc rabidiori conatu adversus Ecclesiae fundamentum, cathedram scilicet Petri, impetum facere videmus. Reges terrae et principes convenerunt adversus Dominum et adversus Christum eius; alque utinam plures filii matris nostrae Ecclesiae non pugnarent adversus eam et in servitutem redigere non conarentur !
