Individual' to restore its exhausted means by his judgment, assiduity, integrity, and generosity; and for having at length enabled the Society to place the Institution on a plan more conformable to the will of its Founder, and more available, under Thy blessing, to the ministry of Thy dear Son. "Without Thee, Lord, we can do nothing: we acknowledge Thy past mercies: we confess our own weakness, and implore the aid of Thine almighty Spirit. "Grant unto all who now or hereafter shall be called to rule within these walls, that, joined together in the same mind and the same judgment, they may govern with firmness, moderation, and equity; may instruct with faithfulness, reprove with meekness, encourage with cheerfulness, and watch over the spiritual and temporal welfare of their charge, with the devotedness of men, who must give an account unto Thee. Grant unto all, who shall come hither to study Thy holy word, and make themselves, through Thy grace, able ministers of the New Testament, that they may bring with them teachable hearts, well regulated minds, and an eager thirst after wisdom. General Codrington was a native of Barbados, born in 1668, educated at Christ's Church, Oxford, and subsequently a Fellow of All Souls College. He served under King William III. (whom in his will he calls " his good Master"), and was present at the siege of Namur. At his death he bequeathed his books and a considerable sum of money to All Souls for the erection of a library; and his two estates in Barbados to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, in trust, for the foundation of a College in that island. He died in Barbados in 1701, and was buried in the parish church of St. Michael; but about fifteen years afterwards his body was taken to England, and reinterred at All Souls. A funeral oration was pronounced on the occasion by the public Orator, in which the following allusion is 12 made to both these munificent bequests :-"Quantum Ecclesiam, quantum universum Literatorum ordinem beneficiis sibi obstrinxerit, illustre illud Religionis et bonarum Literarum seminarium in Barbadæ Insulâ assurrecturum ad omne ævum testabitur. Magnum quidem, Codringtone, et unicè tuum est, in ultimos. Eois Occidentisque quà Sol uterque illustrat fines, munificentiam diffundere; terris ethnicâ ignorantiâ et caligine obrutis Evangelii lucem ostendere; Musisque quasi spiritum et vitam, patriamque novam donare: dissitissima loca liberalitate conjungere; efficereque, ut utriusque Hemisphærii incolæ, et tàm barbari quàm politiorum artium studiosi, uno ore, variis licèt dissonisque linguis, laudes tuas concelebrarent."-Oratio Funebris habita in Sacello Collegii Omn. General Codrington, during his lifetime, found a yet higher panegyrist in Addison. In a Latin poem, entitled, Pax, Gulielmi Auspiciis, Europæ reddita, 1697," the following lines Occur: Te1 tamen e mediis, Ductor fortissime, turmis Quem varias edoctum artes, studiisque Minervæ Omnibus ornatum, Marti Rhedycina furenti Credidit invita, et tanto se jactat alumno. When the Society, after the hurricane of 1780, were almost in despair of ever being able again to repair their buildings, and carry on the work of the estate, Mr. Brathwaite expressed his readiness to undertake, at a small nominal rent, the management of it; and did it so faithfully and successfully for ten years, that at the end of that time he gave up the estates, into the Society's hands, free of debt, and with a balance of many thousands in their favour. At the Anniversary Meeting of the Society, in 1796, the Society express themselves " as bound in the strongest sense of gratitude to him for the large sum thus paid over to them, and which they regard in the light of a benefaction from him." A piece of plate of one hundred guineas value was, at the same time, voted to him " as a more permanent and public mark of the Society's gratitude and esteem.
