The plan of these works is not new. It is merely the
adaptation of the experience of many of the best and most
inquiring minds in educational pursuits-methodizing what
was vague and loose. When the Latin tongue was the only
language of diplomacy and scientific international communi-
cation, to acquire a knowledge of it was considered of more
importance than now. This method was then recommended
by Cardinal Wolsey, John Ascham, Latin Secretary to Queen
Elizabeth, and by the best Latin scholar and writer of his
time, John Milton; and in testimony of it John Locke says:
"When by this way of interlining Latin and English one
with another, he has got a moderate knowledge of the Latin
tongue, he may then be advanced a little further. Nor let
the objection that he will then know it only by ROTE, fright
This, when well considered, is not of any moment
any one.
against, but plainly for, this way of learning a language.
The languages are only to be learned by ROTE; and he that
speaks them well has no other rule but that." In teaching
classes by oral dictation, these works present advantages
that no others do.

CLARK'S PRACTICAL AND PROGRESSIVE
LATIN GRAMMAR: adapted to the Interlinear
Series of Classics, and to all other systems-1 vol-
ume, royal 12mo, half Turkey.
$1.50

The plan of this Grammar is altogether of a practical nature: for, while the scholar is learning the declensions and conjugations, he has them exemplified in lessons extracted from the Classics. Where this method has been properly applied, a more rapid and thorough knowledge of the clements of Latin has always been the result.

This work is designed for the use of those persons who, though previously unacquainted with the Greek language, would nevertheless be glad to read the New Testament in its original tongue. It contains what is absolutely necessary for the understanding of the New Testament Greek. Those familiar with the work before publication have been able to proceed at once (with the assistance of some good N. T. Lexicon and Buttmann's Grammar of the N. T. Greek,—or Winer's) to the reading of the easier portions of the New Testament. A Compendious and Complete Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament; with an English-Hebrew Index. 6.-THE CHAUTAUQUA TEXT-BOOKS. No. 1. Biblical Exploration. A Condensed Manual on How to Study the Bible. By J. H. VINCENT, D.D.

10 cents.

Full and rich. Dr. Davis modestly calls himself the editor of the work, but it is anything but a mere revision or compilation. Nearly every page bears evidence of original thought and independent investigation, and many improvements have been made upon the work of previous lexicographers in the handling of roots and derivatives.

"While the Lexicons of Gesenius and Fürst have been made the chief basis-as they must be for any genuine advance in this direction-the definitions have all been rewritten and condensed without being abridged, so as to make them more convenient for reference, and the whole work less bulky and expensive."

Practical use of the Lexicon for six years since, and the work of revision, now completed-in the course of which every article has been compared with Tregelles's edition of Gesenius-has served only to confirm this judgment. So far from being an abridgment, the present edition will be found to contain over a thousand more Hebrew words or forms than appear in Tregelles's or Robinson's Gesenius, besides incorporating into the body of the work all the grammatical forms contained in Robinson's Analytical Appendix.

Hill's Ethics of Moral Philosophy. By Rev. W. H. HILL, S. J., Professor of Philosophy in St. Louis University, Author of Logic and Ontology, or General Metaphysics. Second Revised Edition. $1.50.

"It is seldom that a book on an abstruse and difficult subject rises rapidly into public favor. But such was the need of a work in English on Ethics, and so great was the merit of Father Hill's volume, that in two months the first edition of 1,000 Copies was entirely exhausted. The favorable notice taken of the book by reviewers, and the many flattering private communications received by the publishers, are proof that the public has found a long felt want well supplied, and give encouragement for the issuing of a second and larger Edition, which we now offer them ".

"Bus it is rather the work than its author that we recommend; and we earnestly wish that true etical principles should be deeply rooted in the minds and hearts of the nation ".
