NOTES IN SEASON. JOHN CHURCH & Co. have just ready "Palace of Song," a new music-book by Dr. Geo. F. Root, for conventions, singing-schools, and choirs.

HENRY HOLT & Co. will presently publish in book form Mr. Whitelaw Reid's recent address on "Some Aspects of Journalism,' certainly one of the most suggestive and valuable contributions that has been made to this subject.

A. D. F. RANDOLPH & Co. will issue at once the memoirs of Count Agenor de Gasparin," by the Pastor Borel, which they have had translated from the French, and which will be issued in England in their translation. It is said to be a charming sketch of a Christian hero.

WILLIAM BLAIKIE'S excellent little book, "How to Get Strong, and How to Stay So," has reached its fourth edition at Harper & Bros.' The first edition was exhausted in ten days, the second in four more, and there was so brisk a demand for the third that a fourth was ordered close upon it.

"DEAR Old Stories, Told Once More," by Faith Latimer, published by the American Tract Society about a year ago, has been very successful, the first edition of 5000 being entirely exhausted. The second edition of the same, now in the bindery, is an improvement on the first, having some colored illustrations added.

LINDSAY & BLAKISTON will have ready shortly a new Health Primer, by Dr. J. C. Wilson, on the timely subject "Summer and its Diseases,"

and an "Introduction to the Practice of Commercial Organic Analysis," by Alfred H. Allen. They have also nearly ready new editions of Dr. L. Turnbull's "Advantages and Accidents of Artificial Anesthesia," and Bucknill and Tuke's "Manual of Psychological Medicine,"

etc.

CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS have now ready "The Life and Letters of Madame Bonaparte,' edited by Mr. Eugene L. Didier, of Baltimore. This book, portraying the haughty and indomitable character of this remarkable woman, is an important contribution to biography, aside from its present interest. Stuart's threefold portrait of Mme. Bonaparte forms a frontispiece to the volume, which the publishers present in a novel binding of light brown cloth, stamped in red and mauve.

MACMILLAN & Co. expect at once "The Life of Charles James Matthews," the celebrated actor who was almost as well known in New York as in London, and was in fact at home on any stage in the world. The story is chiefly with autobiographical, brimming over the esprit of the great comedian, but Mr. Charles Dickens, who has edited it, has filled it out with selections from Matthews' correspondence and speeches, making it a better representation of the man. It will be one of the most enjoyable books of the year.

D. APPLETON & Co., by arrangement with Macmillan & Co., will be the American publishers of the little series on Classical Writers, which will probably make 50-cent volumes. Milton," by Rev. Stopford A. Brooke, is the initial volume, and is nearly ready. A manual of "Early English Literature,' by Brother Azarias, of Maryland; "Young Maugars," by André Theuriet, in the Collection of Foreign Authors; and "Money," a French story, in the New Handy- Volume series, will also be published forthwith.

SCRIBNER & WELFORD have ready two more volumes of the excellent Illustrated Biographies of Great Artists, which they issue on this side-" Raphael," by N. D'Anvers, a wellknown art writer, and Van Dyck and Hals," by Percy R. Head, of Oxford. These books are based on the very latest German and other authorities, and the copious illustration makes them peculiarly valuable, while their price is exceptionally low. A new South Kensington Hand-book is also just in, Spanish Arts," treated by Signor Juan F. Riaño, who presents a succinct history, fully illustrated, of Spanish art manufactures.

R. WORTHINGTON has just ready the second edition of the "Souvenirs of Mme. LeBrun," a book which has earned its success in spite of the dull season. Mr. Worthington is heartily to be complimented on the typography and ful book, which, though at a low price, is one general appearance of this exceedingly taste

of the most creditable recent issues of American book-makers. Mr. Worthington will send out next week "A Scotchman's Views of America-White and Black," in which Sir George Campbell gives his experiences, observations, and opinions resulting from a wide tour in this country, particularly in the South. This also will make a handsome volume. series of popular novels, bound together in cloth volumes, will also presently be issued.

WEEKLY RECORD OF NEW PUBLICATIONS.

In this list, the titles in brevier are direct transcriptions from books actually received, according to the rules of the American Library Association; those in nonpareil are from the best information available, and will be repeated in brevier when the book is received for registry.

The notes followed by a number are those which are sent out on printed title-slips, as revised by the Library Association authorities; unless bracketed, which means that they have not yet been so revised. Those not followed by a number are on the sole authority of the WEEKLY, and are not included in the title-slip registry.

The abbreviations are usually self-explanatory. A colon after initial designates the most usual given name, as: A: Augustus; B: Benjamin; C: Charles; D: Daniel; E: Edward; F: Frederic; G: George: H: Henry; 1: Isaac: J: John; L: Louis; N: Nicholas; P: Peter; R: Richard; S: Samuel; T: Thomas; W: William.

(48mo: 10 cm.). Sq., obl., nar., designate square, oblong, narrow books of these heights. Where figure instead of letter symbols are used, the record is from publisher's designation, and not measurement.

Imported books are marked with an asterisk; authors' and subscription books, or books published at net prices, with two asterisks; educational books published at “wholesale" prices, with a dagger.
