Excerpt from An Address to Dr. Priestly, Upon His Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity Illustrated

OU may perhaps in fome degree anfwer me, by laying, that at your very beginning, when you take ln hand to treat of Liberty and Necefilty; you give full feope to the powers of man. And allow him all the freedom that can be wilhed, in refpeéi: both to thinking and acting. It muii be confehed, that you do but how this correfponds with your afi'ertions afterwards, will be our future confideration. It may be want of difc'ernment on my fide', which prevents my uniformly perceiving the force of your arguments. But to the belt of my judgment, the concehions, -whicli you make at the beginning, are inconfifie'nt with what you Tay afterwards. Theyxfeem to be contra fdiéted through the whole courfe of your trea tife. However, as you afi'ure us, that philofo phical necefiity may be made to agree very well with human freedom, let us apply to your own words, where you firf't fpeak upon the fubjeé't.
