THIS Volume owes its appearance to an express and an emphatic resolution of the Dudley Conference of 1862. For many years the desire had been cherished that the venerable author of these sermons might not pass away to the rest of the glorified ere he put into an endurable form a selection from his unpublished discourses. Never, however, until recently was his consent obtained, when a Committee, consisting of the Revs. H. O. Crofts, D.D., A. M'Curdy, and J. Stokoe, were appointed to give effect to the undertaking. The Committee congratulate the community, of which Mr Allin is a distinguished minister of more than half a century's standing, on the completion of their work. It is deeply to be regretted that the final revision and correction of the sheets as they passed through the press could not have the benefit of the sharp and scrutinising eye of the author. Ere the work had proceeded far, he was visited with a stroke of paralysis, which entirely prostrated him, and at one time seemed to be the immediate harbinger of death.
