In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father), full of • The rendering in this Section is according to the common version: in the Appendix will be given two other renderings, MATT. SECT. II. General View of the Ministry of the Baptist. MATT. III. MARK I. THE beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was this: LUKE III. Now in the fifteenth year of the government of | Tiberius Cæsar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip being tetrarch of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias being tetrarch of Abilene, 2 under the high-priest Annas, and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto John, the son of Zachariah, in the desert. LUKE III. 10 And the multitudes asked him, saying," What therefore shall we do?" 11 But he answereth and saith unto them, "Let him that hath two vests, give one to him that hath none; and let him that hath provisions, do likewise." 12 Now there came also publicans to be baptized; and they said un to him, "Rabbi! what shall we do?" 13 And he said unto them, "Exact no more than that which is appointed for you." 14 And the soldiers+ also asked him, saying, "And what shall we do?" And he said unto them, "Use not violent extortion towards any one, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages." 15 Now as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether he were the Christ; 16 John answered 7 And he preached, them all, saying, "I indeed saying, "There cometh am baptizing you with after me one mightier water; but one mightier than I, the thong of than I is coming, the whose sandals I am not thong of whose sandals I worthy to stoop down am not worthy to unloose: he will baptize you with 11 I indeed am baptizing JOHN Aidaokados will be rendered Rabbi, when this seems best to express the force of the word. The associations with Teacher are not yet sufficiently fixed; and Master is often ambiguous in its import. It is evident from John i. 38, that didaokaλog is the rendering of paßßi. + στρατευομενοι, persons engaged in military service. Luke often uses στρατιωτης, soldier, and it seems, therefore, reasonable to conclude that he meant to denote that these persons were actually engaged in some warlike expedition. LUKE III. the holy spirit and with fire: 17 whose winnowingshovel is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshingfloor; and he will gather the wheat into his granary, but will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." 18 Giving, therefore, many and different exhortations, he continued publishing his glad tidings to the people.* 19 But Herod the te trarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias his brother's wife, and concerning all the evil things which Herod did, 20 added this also above all, that he shut up John in prison.
