MULCAILE, from the third edition, in 2 vols.-revised and considerably augmented by the Author. Price to Subscribers, $1 per copy. ry, The Prospectus is already before the public. In an age when infidelity and atheism stalk abroad with the most barefaced arrogance, not only ridiculing the fundamental doctrines of Christianity, but daring to deny the existence of future rewards and punishments, the miracles and mercies of our Blessed Saviour Jesus Christ, and the very being of God; it is reasonably presumed that no publication will be more acceptable to Christians who are duly impressed with the end of their creation, and the importance of their baptismal engagements, than a series of pious meditations on the life of our Divine Saviour. They were written by St. Bonaventure, a prelate, equally celebrated for his ardent piety and profound learning, above five hundred years since; when, having no religious dissentions to encounter, his sole view was to aid us, in meditating on those admirable examples, which it is our great duty and interest to imitate. This treatise will not only be found useful as a book of spiritual reading, but also adapted, by its arrangement, to the different seasons of the year. In Advent, may be read and devoutly considered, that part of the work from the beginning to the nativity of our Lord. The subsequent part relating to the nativity, is well suited to the holy time of Christmas. The other chapters may be used at different times, according to the subject, which the Church proposes to our meditation. In the present edition, the first yet issued in America, care has been taken to correct the errata which were noticed in former publications of the work, and to render it, in every respect, useful and interesting to the Christian reader. It will contain about 350 pages duodecimo. Price (to subscribers,) 62 cents, neatly put up in boards; 75 cents, bound. LIVES OF THE SAINTS OF THE ORIENTAL DESERTS. THE LIVES OF THE SAINTS OF THE DESERTS have been always looked upon as the most edifying, as well as entertaining part of ancient church history. ** * That an attentive persual of them may prove as beneficial to our countrymen as to other nations, is our principal motive in presenting this abstract to the American reader; to whom it may also serve as an Essay on a part of History which has never appeared collectively in the English language, in the compilation whereof we have been careful, first, not to insert any thing for the truth of which we had not the testimony of authors well informed of the facts they deliver; and, in the next place, not to lard our history with our own reflections, but to season it with the words and sentiments of the Saints themselves, and the sublime lessons they inculcated to those who came to consult them. Although many of the practices recorded in the lives of those illustrious men, which they were authorized to follow by an extraordinary inspiration, are out of the common road of the other servants of God, and therefore more to be admired than imitated, we may nevertheless, from the consideration of them, take occasion both to glorify God, who is wonderful in his Saints, and animate ourselves to greater fervor and perfection in the discharge of our ordinary christian duties. By way of Appendix we have added a collection of remarkable sayings, memorable actions, and examples of the ancient hermits, from the most authentic records of the ages in which they lived, which we hope will both delight and edify the reader, whose spiritual advantage alone we have in view; dedicating the whole to the greater glory of our common Lord and Master, to whom be praise, honor, and glory, for ever and ever. Amen. It will contain about 350 pages duodecimo. Price (to subscribers,) 62 cents, neatly put up in boards; 75 cents, bound. |
