26 E, dopo ch' ebber cantato l' inno, se ne uscirono al monte degli Ulivi.

27 E Gesù disse loro: Voi tutti sarete scandalezzati in me questa notte; perciocchè egli è scritto; Io percuoterò il Pastore, e le pecore saran disperse.

28 Ma, dopo che sarò risuscitato, io andrò dinanzi a voi in Galilea. 29 E Pietro gli disse: Avvegnachè tutti gli altri signo scandalezzati di te, io però non lo sarò.

30 E Gesù gli disse: Io ti dico in verità, che oggi, in questa stessa notte, avanti che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte.

31 Ma egli víe più fermamente diceva: Quantunque mi convenisse morir teco, non però ti rinnegherò. Il simigliante dicevano ancora tutti gli altri.

32 Poi vennero in una villa detta Ghetsemane; ed egli disse a' suoi discepoli: Sedete qui, finchè io abbia orato.

33 E prese seco Pietro, e Giacomo, e Giovanni; e cominciò ad essere spaventato, e gravemente angosciato ;

34 E disse loro: L' anima mia è occupata di tristizia infino alla morte; dimorate qui, e vegliate. 35 E, andato un poco innanzi, si gettò in terra, e pregava che, se era possibile, quell' ora passasse oltre di lui,

36 E disse: Abba, Padre, ogni cosa ti è possibile; trasporta via da me questo calice; ma pure, non ciò che io voglio, ma ciò che tu vuoi.

37 Poi venne, e trovò i discepoli che dormívano, e disse a Pietro: Simone, dormi tu? non hai tu potuto vegliar pure un' ora?

38 Vegliate, ed orate, che non entriate in tentazione; bene è lo spírito pronto, ma la carne è debole.

39 E di nuovo andò, ed orò, dicendo le medésime parole. 40 E, tornato, trovò i discepoli, [Ital. & Eng.] 5

27 And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.

28 But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. 29 But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

30 And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

31 But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

32 And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

33 And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;

34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless, not what I will, but what thou wilt.

37 And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

39 And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words. 40 And when he returned, he 129

che di nuovo dormivano; perciocchè i loro occhi erano aggravati; e non sapevano che rispondergli. 41 Poi venne la terza volta, e disse loro: Dormite pur da ora innanzi, e riposatevi; basta, l' ora è venuta; ecco, il Figliuol dell' uomo è dato nelle mani de' peccatori.

42 Levatevi, andiamo; ecco, colui che mi tradisce è vicino.

43 E in quello stante, mentre egli parlava ancora, giunse Giuda, l' uno de' dodici, e con lui una gran turba, con ispade, ed aste, da parte de' principali sacerdoti, degli scribi, e degli anziani.

44 Or colui che lo tradíva avea dato loro un segnale, dicendo: Colúi il quale io avrò baciato è desso ; pigliatelo, menatelo sicuramente. 45 E, come fu giunto, subito si accostò a lui, e disse: Ben ti sia, Maestro, e lo baciò.

46 Allora coloro gli misero le mani addosso, e lo presero.

47 E un di coloro ch' erano quivi presenti trasse la spada, e percosse il servitore del sommo sacerdote, e gli spiccò l'orecchio.

48 E Gesù fece lor motto, e disse: Voi siete usciti con ispade, e con aste, come contro a un ladrone, per pigliarmi.

49 Io era tuttodì appresso di voi insegnando nel tempio, e voi non mi avete preso; ma ciò è avvenuto, acciocchè le scritture sieno adempiute.

50 E tutti, lasciatolo, se ne fuggirono.

51 E un certo giovane lo seguitava, involto d' un panno lino sopra la carne ignuda, e i fanti lo presero.

52 Ma egli, lasciato il panno, se ne fuggì da loro, ignudo.

53 Ed essi ne menárono Gesù al sommo sacerdote; appresso il quale si raunárono insieme tutti i principali sacerdoti, e gli anziani, e gli scribi.

54 E Pietro lo seguitava da lungi, fin dentro alla corte del sommo

found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.

41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42 Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

43 And immediately, while he yet spake, cometh Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44 And he that betrayed him had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; take him, and lead him away safely. 45 And as soon as he was come, he goeth straightway to him, and saith, Master, Master; and kissed him.

55 Or i principali sacerdoti, e tutto il concistoro, cercavan testimonianza contro a Gesù, per farlo morire; e non ne trovavano alcuna. 56 Perciocchè molti dicevano falsa testimonianza contro a lui; ma le loro testimonianze non eran conformi.

57 Allora alcuni, levátisi, disser falsa testimonianza contro a lui, dicendo:

58 Noi l'abbiamo udito che dicea: Io disfarò questo tempio, fatto d' opera di mano, e in tre giorni ne riedificherò un altro, che non sarà fatto d' opera di mano.

59 Ma, non pur così la lor testimonianza era conforme.

60 Allora il sommo sacerdote, levatosi in piè quivi in mezzo, domandò a Gesù, dicendo: Non rispondi tu nulla? che testimoniano costoro contro a te?

61 Ma egli tacque, e non rispose nulla. Da capo il sommo sacerdote lo domandò, è gli disse: Sei tu il Cristo, il Figliuol del Benedetto?

62 E Gesù disse: St, io lo sono; e voi vedrete il Figliuol dell' uomo sedere alla destra della Potenza, e venire con le nuvole del cielo.

63 E il sommo sacerdote, stracciatesi le veste, disse: Che abbiam noi più bisogno di testimoni?

64 Voi avete udita la bestemmia; che ve ne pare? E tutti lo condannarono, pronunziando ch' egli era reo di morte.

65 E alcuni presero a sputargli addosso, e a velargli la faccia, e a dargli delle guanciate, ed a dirgli: Indovina. E i sergenti gli davan delle bacchettate.

66 Ora, essendo Pietro nella corte di sotto, venne una delle fanti del sommo sacerdote;

67 E, veduto Pietro che si scaldava, lo riguardò in viso, e disse: Ancora tu eri con Gesù Nazareno;

68 Ma egli lo negò, dicendo: Io

55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none.

56 For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.

57 And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,

58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.

59 But neither so did their witness agree together.

60 And the high priest stood up. in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses ?

64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.

66 And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest:

67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth.

68 But he denied, saying, I know

ti dica. E uscì fuori all' antiporto, e il gallo cantò.

69 E la fante, vedutolo di nuovo, cominciò a dire a quelli ch' eran quivi presenti: Costui è di quelli. 70 Ma egli da capo lo negò. E, poco stante, quelli ch' eran quivi disser di nuovo a Pietro: Veramente tu sei di quelli: perciocchè tu sei Galileo, e la tua favella ne ha la somiglianza.

71 Ma egli prese a maledirsi, e a giurare: Io non conosco quell' uomo che voi dite.

72 E il gallo cantò la seconda volta; e Pietro si ricordò della parola che Gesù gli avea detta: Avanti che il gallo canti due volte, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte. E si mise a piagnere.

CAPO 15.

E SUBITO la mattina, i princi

pali sacerdoti, con gli anziani, e gli scribi, e tutto il concistoro, tenuto consiglio, legarono Gesù, e lo menarono, e lo misero in man di Pilato.

2 E Pilato gli domandò: Sei tu il Re de' Giudei? Ed egli, rispondendo, gli disse: Tu lo dici.

3 E i principali sacerdoti l' accusavano di molte cose; ma egli non rispondeva nulla.

4 E Pilato da capo lo domandò, dicendo: Non rispondi tu nulla? vedi quante cose costoro testimo

niano contro a te.

5 Ma Gesù non rispose nulla di più, talchè Pilato se ne maravigliava.

6 Or ogni festa egli liberava loro un prigione, qualunque chiedes

sero.

7 Or vi era colui, ch' era chiamato Barabba, ch' era prigione co' suoi compagni di sedizione, i quali avean fatto micidio nella sedizione.

8 E la moltitudine, gridando, cominciò a domandare che facesse come sempre avea lor fatto.

9. E Pilato rispose loro, dicendo:

69 And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them.

70 And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.

71 But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.

72 And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept. thought CHAPTER 15.

ND straightway in the morn

AND ing the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.

2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.

3 And the chief priests accused him of many things; but he answered nothing.

4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.

5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.

7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.

8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.

9 But Pilate answered them, say

10 (Perciocchè riconosceva bene che i principali sacerdoti glielo aveano messo nelle mani per invidia.)

11 Ma i principali sacerdoti incitarono la moltitudine a chieder che più tosto liberasse loro Barabba.

12 E Pilato, rispondendo, da capo disse loro: Che volete adunque che io faccia di colui che voi chiamate Re de' Giudei?

13 Ed essi di nuovo gridárono: Crocifiggilo.

14 E Pilato disse loro: Ma pure, che male ha egli fatto? Ed essi vie più gridavano: Crocifiggilo.

15 Pilato adunque, volendo soddisfare alla moltitudine, liberò loro Barabba. E, dopo aver flagellato Gesù, lo diede loro in mano, per esser crocifisso.

16 Allora i soldati lo menarono dentro alla corte, che è il Pretorio, e raunarono tutta la schiera.

17 E lo vestirono di pórpora; e, contesta una corona di spine, gliela misero intorno al capo.

18 Poi presero a salutarlo, e a dire: Ben ti sia, Re de' Giudei. 19 E gli percotévano il capo con una canna, e gli sputavano addos89; e, postisi inginocchioni, l' ado

ravano.

20 E, dopo che l'ébbero schernito, lo spogliarono della porpora, e lo rivestirono de' suoi propri vestimenti, e lo menarono fuori, per crocifiggerlo.

21 E angariarono, a portar la croce di esso, un certo passante, detto Simon Cirenéo, padre di Alessandro, e di Rufo, il qual tornava da' campi.

22 E menarono Gesù al luogo, detto Golgota; il che, interpretato, vuol dire: Il luogo del teschio.

23 E gli dieder da bere del vino condito con mirra; ma egli non lo prese.

24 E, dopo averlo crocifisso, spartirono i suoi vestimenti, tirando la

11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.

12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Pretorium; and they call together the whole band.

17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, 18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his

cross.

22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.

23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

24 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments,
