2 Or anche Gesù, co' suoi discepoli, fu chiamato alle nozze.

3 Ed essendo venuto meno il vino, la madre di Gesù gli disse: Non han più vino.

4 Gesù le disse: Che v'è fra te e me, o donna? l'ora mia non è ancora venuta.

5 Sua madre disse a' servitori: Fate tutto ciò ch' egli vi dirà.

6 Or quivi erano sei pile di pietra, poste secondo l' usanza della purificazione de' Giudei, le quali contenevano due o tre misure grandi per una.

7 Gesù disse loro: Empiete d' acqua le pile. Ed essi l'empierono fino in cima.

8 Poi egli disse loro: Attignete ora, e portatelo allo scalco. Ed essi gliel portarono.

9 E, come lo scalco ebbe assaggiata l'acqua ch' era stata fatta vino, (or egli non sapeva onde quel vino si fosse, ma ben lo sapevano i servitori che aveano attinta l' acqua), chiamò lo sposo,

10 E gli disse: Ogni uomo presenta prima il buon vino; e, dopo che si è bevuto largamente, il men buono; ma tu hai serbato il buon vino infino ad ora.

11 Gesù fece questo principio di miracoli in Cana di Galilea, e manifestò la sua gloria; e i suoi discepoli credettero in lui.

12 Dopo questo discese in Capernaum, egli, e sua madre, e i suoi fratelli, e i suoi discepoli, e stettero quivi non molti giorni.

13 Or la pasqua de' Giudei era vicina; e Gesù salì in Gerusalem

me.

14 E trovò nel tempio coloro che vendevano buoi, e pecore, e colombi; ei cambiatori, che sedevano.

15 Ed egli, fatta una sferza di cordicelle, li cacciò tutti fuor del tempio, insieme co' buoi, e le pecore; e sparse la moneta de' cambiatori, e riversò le tavole.

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. 3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was, (but the servants which drew the water knew,) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples; and they continued there not many days.

13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

2 Costui venne a Gesù di notte, e gli disse: Maestro, noi sappiamo che tu sei un dottore venuto da Dio; conciossiachè niuno possa fare i segni che tu fai, se Iddio non è con lui.

3 Gesù rispose, e gli disse: In verità, in verità, io ti dico, che, se alcuno non è nato di nuovo, non può vedere il regno di Dio.

4 Nicodemo gli disse: Come può un uomo, essendo vecchio, nascere?

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house a house of merchandise.

17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,

25 And needed not that any should testify of man; for he knew what was in man.

CHAPTER 3.

HERE was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

? The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he

5 Gesù rispose: In verità, in verità, io ti dico, che, se alcuno non è nato d'acqua e di Spirito, non può entrar nel regno di Dio.

6 Ciò che è nato della carne è carne; ma ciò che è nato dello Spirito è spirito.

7 Non maravigliarti ch' io ti ho detto che vi convien nascer di

nuovo.

8 Il vento soffia ove egli vuole, e tu odi il suo suono, ma non sai onde egli viene, nè ove egli va; così è chiunque è nato dello Spirito.

9 Nicodemo rispose, e gli disse: Come possono farsi queste cose?

10 Gesù rispose, e gli disse: Tu sei il dottore d' Israele, e non sai queste cose?

11 In verità, in verità, io ti dico, che noi parliamo ciò che sappiamo, e testimoniamo ciò che abbiamo veduto; ma voi non ricevete la nostra testimonianza.

12 Se io vi ho dette le cose terrene, e non credete, come crederete, se io vi dico le cose celesti?

13 Or niuno è salito in cielo, se non colui ch'è disceso dal cielo, cioè il Figliuol dell' uomo, ch'è nel cielo.

14 E, come Mosè alzò il serpente nel deserto, così conviene che il Figliuol dell' uomo sia innalzato,

15 Acciocchè chiunque crede in lui non perisca, ma abbia vita eterna.

16 Perciocchè Iddio ha tanto amato il mondo, ch' egli ha dato il suo unigenito Figliuolo, acciocchè chiunque crede in lui non perisca, ma abbia vita eterna.

17 Conciossiachè Iddio non abbia mandato il suo Figliuolo nel mondo, acciocchè condanni il mondo, anzi, acciocchè il mondo sia salvato per lui.

18 Chi crede in lui non sarà con

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 ¶ He that believeth on him is

dannato, ma chi non crede già è condannato, perciocchè non ha creduto nel nome dell' unigenito Figliuol di Dio.

19 Or questa è la condannazione, che la luce è venuta nel mondo, e gli uomini hanno amate le tenebre più che la luce, perciocchè le loro opere erano malvage.

20 Conciossiachè chiunque fa cose malvage odii la luce, e non venga alla luce, acciocchè le sue opere non sien convinte.

21 Ma colui che fa opere di verità viene alla luce, acciocchè l' opere sue sien palesate, perciocchè son fatte in Dio.

22 Dopo queste cose, Gesù, co' suoi discepoli, venne nel paese della Giudea, e dimorò quivi con loro, e battezzava.

23 Or Giovanni battezzava anche egli in Enon, presso di Salim, perciocchè ivi erano acque assai; e la gente veniva, ed era battezzata.

24 Conciossiachè Giovanni non era ancora stato messo in prigione. 25 Laonde fu mossa da' discepoli di Giovanni una quistione co' Giudei, intorno alla purificazione.

26 E vennero a Giovanni, e gli dissero Maestro, ecco, colui ch' era teco lungo il Giordano, a cui tu rendesti testimonianza, battezza, e tutti vengono a lui.

27 Giovanni rispose, e disse: L'uomo non può ricever nulla, se non gli è dato dal cielo.

28 Voi stessi mi siete testimoni ch' io ho detto: Io non sono il Cristo; ma ch' io son mandato davanti a lui. 29 Colui che ha la sposa è lo sposo, ma l'amico dello sposo, che è presente, e l' ode, si rallegra grandemente della voce dello sposo; perciò, questa mia allegrezza è compiuta.

30 Convien ch' egli cresca, e ch' io diminuisca.

31 Colui che vien da alto è sopra tutti; colui ch'è da terra è di terra, e di terra parla; colui che vien dal cielo è sopra tutti;

not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

23 ¶ And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there and they came, and were baptized. 24 For John was not yet cast into prison.

25 Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.

26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

32 E testifica ciò ch' egli ha veduto ed udito; ma niuno riceve la sua testimonianza.

33 Colui che ha ricevuta la sua testimonianza ha suggellato che Iddio è verace.

34 Perciocchè, colui che Iddio ha mandato parla le parole di Dio; conciossiachè Iddio non gli dia lo Spirito a misura.

35 Il Padre ama il Figliuolo, e gli ha data ogni cosa in mano.

32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

CAPO 4.

UANDO adunque il Signore ebbe saputo che i Farisei aveano udito, che Gesù faceva, e battezzava più discepoli che Giovanni, 2 (Avvegnachè Gesù stesso non battezzasse, ma i suoi discepoli,) 3 Lasciò la Giudea, e se ne andò di nuovo in Galilea.

4 Or gli conveniva passar per lo paese di Samaria.

5 Venne adunque ad una città del paese di Samaria, detta Sichar, che presso della possessione, la quale Giacobbe diede a Giuseppe, suo figliuolo.

6 Or quivi era la fontana di Giacobbe. Gesù adunque, affaticato del cammino, sedeva così in su la fontana; or era intorno alle sei ore.

7 E una donna di Samaria venne, per attigner dell' acqua. E Gesù le disse: Dammi da bere.

8 (Perciocchè i suoi discepoli erano andati nella città, per comperar da mangiare.)

9 Laonde la donna Samaritana gli disse: Come, essendo Giudeo, domandi tu da bere a me, che son donna Samaritana? conciossiachè i Giudei non usino co' Samaritani.

10 Gesù rispose, e le disse: Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio, e chi è colui che ti dice: Dammi da bere, tu stessa gliene avresti chiesto, ed [Ital. & Eng.] 8*

CHAPTER 4.

WHEN therefore the Lord

knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

3 He left Judea, and departed again into Galilee.

4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou 233
