18 Io ho pregato Tito, ed ho con lui mandato questo fratello. Tito ha egli fatto profitto di voi? non abbiam noi camminato d' un medesimo spirito, per medesime pedate?

19 Pensate voi di nuovo, che noi ci giustifichiamo appo voi? noi parliamo davanti a Dio, in Cristo; è tutto ciò, diletti, per la vostra edificazione.

20 Perciocchè io temo che talora, quando io verrò, io non vi trovi quali io vorrei; e ch' io altresì sia da voi ritrovato quale voi non vorreste; che talora, non vi sieno contese, gelosie, ire, risse, detrazioni, bisbigli, gonfiamenti, tumulti;

21 E che, essendo di nuovo venuto, l' Iddio mio non m' umilii appo voi; e ch' io non pianga molti di coloro che innanzi han peccato, e non si son ravveduti dell' immondizia, e della fornicazione, e della dissoluzione che hanno commessa.

CAPO 13.

ECCO, questa è la terza volta

ch' io vengo a voi; ogni parola è confermata per la bocca di due, o di tre testimoni.

2 Già l'ho detto innanzi tratto, e lo dico ancora, come presente; anzi, essendo assente, ora scrivo a coloro che hanno innanzi peccato, e a tutti gli altri; che se io vengo di nuovo, non risparmierò alcuno: 3 Poichè voi cercate la prova di Cristo che parla in me, il quale inverso voi non è debole, ma è potente in voi.

4 Perciocchè, se egli è stato crocifisso per debolezza, pur vive egli per la potenza di Dio; perciocchè ancora noi siam deboli in lui, ma viveremo con lui, per la potenza di Dio, inverso voi.

5 Provate voi stessi, se siete nella fede; fate sperienza di voi stessi; non vi riconoscete voi stessi, che Gesù Cristo è in voi? se già non siete riprovati.

6 Ed io spero che voi riconoscerete che noi non siam riprovati.

7 Or io prego Iddio che voi non facciate alcun male; non acciocchè

18 I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?

19 Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, dearly beloved, for your edifying.

20 For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:

21 And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed. CHAPTER 13.

HIS is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.

2 I told you before, and foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not spare: 3 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.

4 For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.

5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates ? 6 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.

7 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should ap

noi appaiamo approvati, ma acciocchè voi facciate quel che è bene, e noi siamo come riprovati. 8 Perciocchè noi non possiam nulla contro alla verità, ma tutto ciò che possiamo è per la verità.

9 Conciossiachè ci rallegriamo quando siam deboli, e voi siete forti; ma ben desideriamo ancora questo, cioè, il vostro intiero ristoramento.

10 Perciò, io scrivo queste cose, essendo assente; acciocchè, essendo presente, io non proceda rigidamente, secondo la podestà, la quale il Signore mi ha data, a edificazione, e'non a distruzione. 11 Nel rimanente, fratelli, rallegratevi, siate ristorati, siate consolati, abbiate un medesimo sentimento, e state in pace; e l' Iddio della carità, e della pace sarà con voi.

12 Salutatevi gli uni gli altri con un santo bacio; tutti i santi vi salutano.

13 La grazia del Signor Gesù Cristo, e la carità di Dio, e la comunione dello Spirito Santo, sia con tutti voi. Amen.

8 For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.

9 For we are glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection.

10 Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification, and not to destruction.

11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

12 Greet one another with a holy kiss.

13 All the saints salute you. 14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.

12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:

14 And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.

15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace,

16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

4 E ciò, per li falsi fratelli, intromessi sotto mano, i quali erano sottentrati per ispiar la nostra libertà, che noi abbiamo in Cristo Gesù, affin di metterci in servitù ;

5 A' quali non cedemmo per soggezione pur un momento; acciocchè la verità dell' evangelo dimorasse ferma fra voi.

6 Ma non ricevei nulla da coloro che son reputati essere qualche cosa; quali già sieno stati niente m' importa; Iddio non ha riguardo alla qualità d' alcun uomo; per

2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.

3 But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised:

4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

5 To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.

6 But of those who seemed to be somewhat, whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person: for they who seemed to be somewhat

7 Anzi, in contrario, avendo veduto che m' era stato commesso l'evangelo dell' incirconcisione, come a Pietro quel della circoncisione ;

8 (Perciocchè colui che avea potentemente operato in Pietro per l'apostolato della circoncisione, avea eziandio potentemente operato in me inverso i Gentili ;) 9 E Giacomo, e Cefa, e Giovanni, che son reputati esser colonne, avendo conosciuta la grazia che m' era stata data, diedero a me, e a Barnaba, la mano di società; acciocchè noi andassimo a' Gentili, ed essi alla circoncisione.

10 Sol ci raccomandarono che ci ricordassimo de' poveri; e ciò eziandio mi sono studiato di

fare.

11 Ora, quando Pietro fu venuto in Antiochia, io gli resistei in faccia; conciossiachè egli fosse da riprendere.

12 Perciocchè, avanti che certi fosser venuti d' appresso a Giacomo, egli mangiava co' Gentili; ma, quando coloro furon venuti, si sottrasse, e si separò, temendo quei della circoncisione.

13 E gli altri Giudei s' infignevano anch'essi con lui; talchè eziandio Barnaba era insieme trasportato per la loro simulazione.

14 Ma, quando io vidi che non camminavano di piè diritto, secondo la verità dell' evangelo, io dissi a Pietro, in presenza di tutti: Se tu, essendo Giudeo, vivi alla Gentile, e non alla Giudaica, perchè costrigni i Gentili a giudaizZare?

15 Noi, di natura Giudei, e non peccatori d' infra i Gentili;

16 Sapendo che l' uomo non è giustificato per l'opere della legge, ma per la fede di Gesù Cristo; abbiamo ancora noi creduto in Cristo Gesù, acciocchè fossimo giustificati per la fede di Cristo, e non per l' opere della legge; per

9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.

10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.

11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.

12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision.

13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? 15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the
