CAPO 1.

THE FIRST EPISTLE

OF PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE

THESSALONIANS.

CHAPTER 1.

2 Noi rendiamo del continuo grazie a Dio per tutti voi, facendo di voi menzione nelle nostre orazioni;

3 Rammemorandoci continuamente l'opera della vostra fede, e la fatica della vostra carità, e la sofferenza della speranza che voi avete nel Signor nostro Gesù Cristo; nel cospetto d' Iddio, nostro Padre ;

4 Sapendo, fratelli amati da Dio, la vostra elezione.

5 Conciossiachè il nostro evangelo non sia stato inverso voi in parola solamente, ma ancora in virtù, e in Ispirito Santo, e in molto accertamento; siccome voi sapete quali siamo stati fra voi per

amor vostro.

6 E voi siete stati imitatori nostri, e del Signore, avendo ricevuta la parola in molta afflizione, con allegrezza dello Spirito Santo. 7 Talchè siete stati esempi a tutti i credenti in Macedonia, e in Acaia.

8 Perciocchè non sol da voi è risonata la parola del Signore nella Macedonia, e nell' Acaia; ma ancora la fede vostra, la quale avete inverso Iddio, è stata divolgata in ogni luogo; talchè non abbiam bisogno di dirne cosa alcuna.

9 Conciossiachè eglino stessi raccontino di noi, quale entrata noi

2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers;

3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;

4 Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God.

5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.

6 And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: 7 So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.

8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to Godward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we

abbiamo avuta appo voi, e come vi siete convertiti dagl' idoli a Dio, per servire all' Iddio vivente, e vero; 10 E per aspettar da' cieli il suo Figliuolo, il quale egli ha risuscitato da' morti, cioè, Gesù, che ci libera dall' ira a venire.

CAPO 2.

CHAPTER 2.

te, fratelli, che la nostra entrata appo voi non è stata vana. 2 Anzi, benchè prima avessimo, come sapete, patito, e fossimo stati ingiuriati in Filippi, pur ci sia mo francamente innanimati nell' Iddio nostro, da annunziarvi l'evangelo di Dio con molto combattimento.

3 Conciossiachè la nostra esortazione non sia proceduta da inganno, nè da impurità; e non sia stata con frode.

4 Anzi, come siamo stati approvati da Dio, per fidarci l' evangelo; così parliamo, non come per piacere agli uomini, ma a Dio che prova i nostri cuori.

5 Perciocchè ancora noi non abbiamo giammai usato parlar lusinghevole, come voi sapete, nè occasion d' avarizia: Iddio ne è testimonio;

6 Nè cercata gloria dagli uomini, nè da voi, nè da altri, benchè potessimo usar gravità, come apostoli di Cristo;

7 Ma siamo stati mansueti fra voi, come una balia, che alleva teneramente i suoi propri figliuoli. 8 In questa maniera avendovi sommamente cari, eravamo mossi di buona volontà a comunicarvi, non sol l'evangelo di Dio, ma ancora le nostre proprie anime; conciossiachè ci eravate diletti.

9 Perciocchè, fratelli, voi vi ricordate della nostra fatica, e travaglio; conciossiachè, lavorando giorno e notte, per non gravare alcun di voi, abbiam predicato appo voi l' evangelo di Dio.

10 Voi siete testimoni, e Dio ancora, come ci siam portati santamente, e giustamente, e senza biasimo, inverso voi che credete.

it was not in vain :

2 But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.

3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile :

4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.

5 For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness:

6 Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.

7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children :

8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto

us.

9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

10 Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe :

11 Siccome voi sapete che, come un padre i suoi figliuoli, noi abbiamo esortato, e consolato ciascun di voi ;

12 E protestato che camminiate condegnamente a Dio, che vi chiama al suo regno, e gloria.

13 Perciò ancora, noi non restiamo di render grazie a Dio, di ciò che, avendo ricevuta da noi la parola della predicazion di Dio, voi l'avete raccolta, non come parola d' uomini; ma, siccome è veramente, come parola di Dio, la quale ancora opera efficacemente in voi che credete.

14 Conciossiachè voi, fratelli, siate divenuti imitatori delle chiese di Dio, che son nella Giudea, in Cristo Gesù; perciocchè ancora voi avete sofferte da que' della vostra nazione le medesime cose ch' essi da' Giudei;

15 I quali ed hanno ucciso il Signor Gesù, e i lor propri profeti; e ci hanno scacciati, e non piacciono a Dio, e son contrari a tutti gli uomini ;

16 Divietandoci di parlare a' Gentili, acciocchè sieno salvati; affin di colmar sempre la misura de' lor peccati; or l'ira è venuta sopra loro fino all' estremo.

17 Or noi, fratelli, orbati di voi per un momento di tempo, di faccia, e non di cuore, ci siam vie più studiati di veder la vostra faccia, con molto desiderio.

18 Perciò, siam voluti, io Paolo almeno, una e due volte, venire a voi; ma Satana ci ha impediti.

19 Perciocchè, quale è la nostra speranza, o allegrezza, o corona di gloria? non siete dessa ancora voi, nel cospetto del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, nel suo avvenimento? 20 Conciossiachè voi siate la nostra gloria ed allegrezza.

11 As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,

12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.

13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

14 For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:

15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins always: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.

17 But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.

18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.

19 For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?

20 For ye are our glory and joy.

CHAPTER 3.

2 E mandammo Timoteo, nostro fratello, e ministro di Dio, e nostro

no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;

2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our

di Cristo, per confermarvi, e confortarvi intorno alla vostra fede;

3 Acciocchè niuno fosse commosso in queste afflizioni; conciossiachè voi stessi sappiate che noi siam posti a questo.

4 Perciocchè, eziandio quando eravamo appo voi, vi predicevamo, che saremmo afflitti; siccome ancora è avvenuto, e voi il sapete. 5 Perciò ancora, non potendo più sofferire, io lo mandai, per conoscer la fede vostra; che talora il tentatore non vi avesse tentati, e la nostra fatica non fosse riuscita

vana.

6 Or al presente, essendo Timoteo venuto da voi a noi, e avendoci rapportate liete novelle della vostra fede, e carità; e che voi avete del continuo buona ricordanza di noi, desiderando grandemente di vederci, siccome ancora noi voi ;

7 Perciò, fratelli, noi siamo stati consolati di voi, in tutta la nostra afflizione, e necessità, per la vostra fede.

8 Conciossiachè ora viviamo, se voi state fermi nel Signore.

9 Perciocchè, quali grazie possiam noi render di voi a Dio, per tutta l'allegrezza, della quale ci rallegriamo per voi, nel cospetto dell' Iddio nostro ?

10 Pregando intentissimamente, notte e giorno, di poter vedere la vostra faccia, e compier le cose ancora alla fede

che

mancano

vostra.

11 Or Iddio stesso, Padre nostro, e il Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, addirizzi il nostro cammino a voi.

12 E il Signore vi accresca, e faccia abbondare in carità gli uni inverso gli altri, e inverso tutti; come noi ancora abbondiamo inverso voi ;

13 Per raffermare i vostri cuori, acciocchè sieno irreprensibili in santità, nel cospetto di Dio, Padre nostro, all' avvenimento del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, con tutti i suoi santi. Amen.

Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your

faith:

3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.

5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:

7 Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:

8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

9 For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;

10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.

12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.
