II. EPISTOLA

DI S. PAOLO, APOSTOLO,

A TIMOTEO.

CAPO 1.

PAOLO, apostolo di Gesù Cristo, per la volontà di Dio, secondo la promessa della vita, che è in Cristo Gesù;

2 A Timoteo, figliuol diletto, grazia, misericordia, e pace, da Dio Padre, e dal Signor nostro Cristo Gesù.

3 Io rendo grazie a Dio, al qual servo fin da' miei antenati, in pura coscienza; secondo che non resto mai di ritener la memoria di te nelle mie orazioni, notte e giorno; 4 Desideroso di vederti, ricordandomi delle tue lagrime, acciocchè io sia ripieno d' allegrezza;

5 Riducendomi a memoria la fede non finta che è in te, la qual prima abitò in Loide, tua avola, ed in Eunice, tua madre; or son persuaso che abita in te ancora.

6 Per la qual cagione io ti rammemoro che tu ravvivi il dono di Dio, il quale è in te per l' imposizione delle mie mani.

7 Conciossiachè Iddio non ci abbia dato spirito di timore; ma di forza, e d'amore, e di correzione.

8 Non recarti adunque a vergogna la testimonianza del Signor nostro, nè me suo prigione; anzi partecipa l'afflizioni dell' evangelo, secondo la virtù di Dio;

9 Il qual ci ha salvati, e ci ha chiamati per santa vocazione; non secondo le nostre opere, ma secondo il proprio proponimento, e grazia, la quale ci è stata data in Cristo Gesù avanti i tempi de' secoli;

10 Ed ora è stata manifestata per

TIMOTHY.

CHAPTER 1.

PAUL, an apostle of Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

3 I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

4 Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that Í may be filled with joy;

5 When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance, that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

8 Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

9 Who hath saved us, and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began;

10 But is now made manifest by

l'apparizion del Salvator nostro Gesù Cristo, che ha distrutta la morte, e ha prodotta in luce la vita, e l' immortalità, per l' evangelo;

11 A che io sono stato posto banditore, ed apostolo, e dottor de' Gentili.

12 Per la qual cagione ancora io soffero queste cose; ma non me ne vergogno; perciocchè io so a cui ho creduto, e son persuaso che egli è potente da guardare il mio deposito per quel giorno.

13 Ritieni la forma delle sane parole, che tu hai udite da me, in fede, e carità, che è in Cristo Gesù.

14 Guarda il buon deposito, per lo Spirito Santo, che abita in noi.

15 Tu sai questo, che tutti quelli che son nell' Asia si son ritratti da me, de' quali è Figello, ed Ermogene.

16 Conceda il Signore misericordia alla famiglia d' Onesiforo; perciocchè spesse volte egli mi ha ricreato, e non si è vergognato della mia catena;

17 Anzi, essendo a Roma, studiosissimamente mi ha cercato, e mi ha trovato.

18 Concedagli il Signore di trovar misericordia appo il Signore in quel giorno. Quanti servigi ancora egli ha fatti in Efeso, tu il sai molto bene.

CAPO 2.

U mio, forti

the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel :

11 Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.

CHAPTER 2.

HOU therefore, my son, be

Cristo Gesù.

2 E le cose che tu hai udite da me, in presenza di molti testimoni, commettile ad uomini fedeli, i quali sieno sufficienti ad ammaestrare ancora gli altri.

3 Tu adunque soffri afflizioni, come buon guerriero di Gesù Cristo.

4 Niuno che va alla guerra s' impaccia nelle faccende della vita, acciocchè piaccia a colui che l' ha soldato.

2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

5 Ed anche, se alcuno combatte, non è coronato, se non ha legittimamente combattuto.

6 Egli è convenevole che il lavoratore che fatica goda il primo i frutti.

7 Considera le cose che io dico; perciocchè io prego il Signore che ti dia intendimento in ogni cosa. 8 Ricordati che Gesù Cristo è risuscitato da' morti, il quale è della progenie di Davide, secondo il mio evangelo:

9 Nel quale io soffro afflizione fino ad esser prigione ne' legami, a guisa di malfattore; ma la parola di Dio non è prigione.

10 Perciò io soffro ogni cosa per gli eletti, acciocchè essi ancora ottengano la salute, che è in Cristo Gesù, con gloria eterna.

11 Certa è questa parola; conciossiachè, se moriamo con lui, con lui altresì viveremo;

12 Se soffriamo, con lui altresì regneremo; se lo rinneghiamo, egli altresì ci rinnegherà.

13 Se siamo infedeli, egli pur rimane fedele; egli non può rinnegar sè stesso.

14 Rammemora queste cose, protestando, nel cospetto di Dio, che non si contenda di parole, il che a nulla è utile, anzi è per sovvertir gli uditori.

15 Studiati di presentar te stesso approvato a Dio, operaio che non abbia ad esser confuso, che tagli dirittamente la parola della verità. 16 Ma schifa le profane vanità di voci; perciocchè procederanno innanzi a maggiore empietà.

17 E la parola di tali andrà rodendo, a guisa di gangrena; de' quali è Imeneo, e Fileto;

18 I quali si sono sviati dalla verità; dicendo che la risurrezione è già avvenuta; e sovvertono la fede d' alcuni.

19 Ma pure il fondamento di Dio sta fermo, avendo questo suggello: Il Signore conosce que' che son suoi, e Ritraggasi dall' iniquità chiunque nomina il nome di Cristo.

6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things.

8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead, according to my gospel:

9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.

10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sake, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:

12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.

14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.

15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

17 And their word will eat as doth a canker of whom is Hymeneus and Philetus;

18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

20 But in a great house there are

21 Se dunque alcuno si purifica da queste cose sarà un vaso ad onore, santificato, ed acconcio al servigio del Signore, preparato ad ogni buona opera.

22 Or fuggi gli appetiti giovanili, e procaccia giustizia, fede, carità, pace con quelli che di cuor puro invocano il Signore.

23 E schifa le quistioni stolte, e scempie, sapendo che generano

contese.

24 Or non bisogna che il servitor del Signore contenda; ma che sia benigno inverso tutti, atto, e pronto ad insegnare, che comporti i mali;

not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient;

26 In maniera che tornati a sana mente, uscissero del laccio del diavolo, dal quale erano stati presi, per far la sua volontà.

CAPO 3.

26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

CHAPTER 3.

HIS know also, that in the

2 Perciocchè gli uomini saranno amatori di loro stessi, avari, vanagloriosi, superbi, bestemmiatori, disubbidienti a padri e madri, ingrati, scellerati;

3 Senza affezion naturale, mancatori di fede, calunniatori, incontinenti, spietati, senza amore inverso i buoni;

4 Traditori, temerari, gonfi, amatori della voluttà, anzi che di Dio;

5 Avendo apparenza di pietà, ma avendo rinnegata la forza d' essa; anche tali schifa.

6 Perciocchè del numero di costoro son quelli che sottentrano nelle case, e cattivano donnicciuole cariche di peccati, agitate da varie cupidità;

7 Le quali sempre imparano, e

come.

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

7 Ever learning, and never able
