5 From what will this grace save you? From sin, and from everlasting death. 6 By what means?

Through Jesus Christ our Saviour.

7. What is this state of salvation?

To have the means of being saved if it is not my own fault.

8. How came you into this state?

I was called to it by our heavenly Father.

9. How ought you to feel for it?

To feel thankful to Him in my heart.

10. How may you best continue in it?

By praying to God to give me His grace. 11. For what grace must you pray ?

For strength to persevere unto the end. 12. What is being confirmed?

It is to be strengthened, in renewing the vows. of baptism, by the prayers and blessing of the bishop.

V. Rehearse the articles of thy belief?

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth: and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried, He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead, He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

1. What do you call these words?

The Belief, or Creed, meaning that which I am bound to believe.

2. What do you believe in first of all?

I believe in God.

3. Who is God?

God is the great and good Spirit in whom we live, and move, and have our being.

4. Why do you call God the Father?

Because He hath given us life, and called us sons. 5. Why do you call Him Almighty?

Because He is able to do all things. 6. What else do you call God the Father? Maker of heaven and earth.

7. What do you mean by this?

That He created the world we live in, and the happy place we hope to go to.

8. What do you call God the Son?

Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord.

9. What do these names mean?

Jesus is Saviour, Christ is Anointed, and our Lord is our Master.

10. And what does only Son mean?

That God has no other such Son.

11. What do you believe of Christ being made man? That He was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary.

12. What do you understand by these things?

That He was made of our flesh, yet without sin, being at once both man and God.

13. What else do you believe of Jesus Christ?

That He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried, and that He descended into hell.

14. For whom did He suffer?

For us men, and for our salvation.

15. Under whom did He suffer?

Pontius Pilate, the governor of the country.

16. What did He suffer?

He was crucified, that is nailed to a cross.

17. What else?

He was dead, that is He gave up the ghost. 18. Where was He buried?

In a grave, made in a rock, closed up, and guarded.

19. What do you mean by His descending, or going down, into hell?

That His soul did truly depart this life, into the place of spirits.

20. What further do you believe of Jesus Christ? The third day He arose again from the dead. 21. What does this mean?

He came to life again, of His own accord. 22. When do you say this happened?

Within three days of His being put to death. 23. What next do you believe of Him?

He ascended, that is went up, into heaven.

24. What is heaven?

It is where God is, and what He hath prepared for them that love Him.

25. In what place does Christ there sit or abide?

At the right hand of God the Father Almighty. 26. What does this mean?

That He is in a place of power, to intercede for us, or pray in our behalf.

27. For what purpose will He come thence? To judge the quick and the dead.

28. Who are these?

All mankind, all who shall be alive when He cometh, and all who shall then have died since the world began.

29. What is to judge?

It is calling us to account for what we do, whether good or evil.

30. In whom do you believe besides the Father and the Son?

I believe in the Holy Ghost.

31. Who is the Holy Ghost?

The Holy Spirit of God, the Comforter of Christians in the absence of Christ.

32. What further do you here profess to believe in? The holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

33. What is the church? [11. 4.]

The whole body of faithful Christians.

34. What do you call it?

Holy, that is devoted to the Lord; and catholic, that is universal, or one body though many members.

35. What is the communion of saints?

The spiritual fellowship of all good Christians. 36. With whom have they this fellowship?

With God, and with each other.

37. What is the forgiveness of sins?

It is that God does for Christ's sake blot them out from His remembrance.

38. What is sin?

It is disobeying the will of God.

39. What is the resurrection of the body?

It is for the body after death to come to life again.

40. When will that happen to us?

At the coming of Christ.

41. What is the life everlasting?

It is that which the faithful will then receive, and enjoy for ever in heaven.

42. What do you mean by Amen at the end of the Creed? I mean that I believe these things in earnest, and that I pray God to help my unbelief.

VI. What dost thou chiefly learn in these articles of thy belief?

First, I learn to believe in God the Father, who hath made me, and all the world.

Secondly, in God the Son, who hath redeemed me, and all mankind.

Thirdly, in God the Holy Ghost, who sanctifieth me, and all the elect people of God.

1. Do you believe then in more gods than one?

I believe in God; three persons, and one God. 2. What chiefly do you learn to believe of God the Father?

That He hath made me, and all the world.

3. How hath He made all things?

By the word of His power, first forming, and then preserving them.

4. What chiefly do you learn to believe of God the Son? That He hath redeemed me, and all mankind. 5. What is to redeem?

It is setting us at liberty, by paying for our sins. 6. How did God the Son redeem us?

By the shedding of His blood for the sins of all mankind. [v. 14.]

7. What do you believe of God the Holy Ghost?

That He sanctifieth me, and all the elect people of
God.

8. What is to sanctify?

It is moving us unto holiness.

9. Who are the elect people of God?

Those whom He hath chosen in Christ.

VII. You said that your godfathers and godmothers did promise for you, that you should keep God's commandments.

There are many more; but these are the chief.

VIII. Which be they?

The same which God spake in the twentieth chapter of Exodus, saying, I am the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

1. To whom were these commandments spoken? To the elect people of God. [vI. 9.]

2. Where are they written?

In the twentieth chapter of Exodus.

3. How were they spoken?

By a voice direct from God Himself. 4. What did He say of Himself to His people? I am the Lord thy God.
