lives; for every good deed done by any member of CHRIST's mystical Body, redounds to His praise; and every almsdeed, mortification, sacrifice of self, and venture of faith, has, as it were, a mouth extolling the praise of Him by Whom, and through Whom, alone they can be performed. And next we understand hereby the different acts of our very devotion, which, in those who have the opportunity, should consist at least of these acts:-commendation of ourselves to GOD at first waking; our private morning devotions; reading the Bible, or a spiritual book, with meditation; the frequenting the daily service, where that is possible; the keeping the third, sixth, and ninth hours of prayer; self-examination, evening prayer, and frequent com

munion. By a life of this kind we may day by day magnify our LORD. Nor are we to think it an irksome task. At first it may be trying, and it is well not to begin with too much; but the soul, like the body, strengthens under vigorous and healthy exercise; and what in the beginning is a fatigue, becomes in the end a delight. So it was with David; "At morning, and at noonday, and in the evening will I praise Thee, and that constantly.” "Seven times a day will I praise Thee, because of Thy righteous judgments." Yet while to those who have leisure this course is advised, let not him who has his daily bread to earn, and who is immersed in secular toil, fancy that he is exempt from the duty, or debarred from the blessing of magnifying GOD day by day. Our daily toil is

part of the salutary labour laid on us by GOD; a punishment for sin. It is our lot, and may be sanctified to the saving of our souls. It may be offered to GOD, in union with the labours of JESUS, and thence derive a portion of their efficacy. At the bar, in the senate, at the seat of custom, nay, even in the tented field, men may in their vocation magnify God. And besides doing so, by doing our duty with our might, there are few who cannot, in the midst of their occupations, steal a few moments for the praise of GOD, send up a short prayer to God in the midst of their employment, and sober themselves by a solemn thought of His Pre

sence.

AND WE WORSHIP THY NAME :

EVER WORLD WITHOUT END.

Our praises, then, here, are our preparation for the praises of heaven. What we begin so imperfectly here, we hope to carry out unto perfection hereafter; wherefore we say, "We worship Thy Name ever world without end;" as if hoping thereby never to cease to praise Him. And in another sense even here on earth our worship is ever world without end; for no act of worship once performed can ever cease to be. It is an everlasting remembrance; it stands for ever as a fact before GOD. Like every other act of righteousness, it endureth for ever. What encouragement this is to devotion ! Every work of mercy,

every expression of penitence, every prayer, every aspiration after GOD, are facts before GOD. "Thou puttest my tears in Thy bottle; are not these things noted in Thy book?" What an encouragement this is to the practice of a devout life! and what a warning against carelessness and lukewarmness in the service of GOD! O the sickening thought, that a day must surely come when all our languid prayers, and distracted meditations, and ill-prepared communions, and thankless thanksgivings will meet us again in the face!

And we worship Thy Name. "Holy and reverend is His Name," and yet there is none other name given unto man whereby he may be saved. "And this is the Name whereby He shall be called, The LORD our
