1 ¶ And the Lord visited Sarah multiply thee exceedingly.

as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.

2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time, of which God had spoken to him.

3 And Abraham called the name of his son, that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.

3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

6 And I will make thee exceed

son Isaac, being eight days old, asing fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

God had commanded him.

5 And Abraham was a hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.

GEN. XVII:1-8—B. C. 1898

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee.

8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

Gen. 21:1-5-Isaac, That is, Laughter. As Sarah laughed at the thought of becoming a mother in her old age, so we laugh at the idea of being Israel: but when Isaac was born she laughed for joy, so we will laugh when Israel is known.

Gen. 17:1-8-Abraham, That is, A multitude of nations. These texts are set in reversal as in Levit. 26:42-Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.

DEUT. XXXIII:26-29—

B. C. 1451

26¶ There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky.

27 The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the LORD hath not defied?

† 9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.

10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!

29 And he charged them, and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people: bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite.

30 In the cave that is in the

field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite for a possession of a buryingplace.

7 And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel. *Deut. 33:28-"And Israel dwelleth in safety. The fountain of Jacob alone, In a land of corn and wine; yea, his heavens drop down dew." R.V.

+Numb. 23:9-"For from the top of the rocks I see him, And from the hills I behold him; lo, it is a people that dwell alone, And shall not be reckoned among the nations." R. V. These texts mean no mingling of the seed of "The House of Israel."

31 There they buried Abraham EXOD. XVIII:24-26—B. C. 1491 and Sarah his wife; there they buried Isaac and Rebekah his wife; and there I buried Leah.

32 The purchase of the field and of the cave that is therein was from the children of Heth.

33 And when Jacob had made an end of commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and yielded up the ghost, and was gathered unto his people.

EXOD. XVIII:17-21—B. C. 1491 17 And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou are not able to perform it thyself alone.

19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for

the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

20 And thou shall teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

DEUT. VII:1-11-B. C. 1451

1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the nations greater and mightier than Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven thou:

6 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God; the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth.

7 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:
