PREFACE.

IT has been my endeavour in the following pages to set before the public a correct view of the question touching the Parliamentary Grant to the Roman Catholic College of Maynooth; a question trifling indeed, if contemplated with reference only to the magnitude of the grant; but of great importance when, from its mere pecuniary consideration, we turn to the principle it involves — the nature of the education it promotes - and the alarming evils resulting necessarily therefrom. It then, emerging from its apparent littleness, rises to one of the utmost moment-involving the great responsibility which they incur, who, either nationally or individually, participate, willingly, in the support of such an institution.

It has been my object to place in the hands of those wishing to investigate the subject, the means of doing so, without being compelled to have reference to documents not easy of access. For this, no merit is due to me; I have but followed in the steps of those who have preceded me; theirs has been the labour and difficulty of research; mine,
