CHAPTER III.

Now, what became of Manasseh's younger brother, Ephraim? Jacob, Joseph's father, when blessing Ephraim in Egypt, said: "His seed shall become a multitude of nations." (Gen. 48:19.) Ferrar Fenton's version has it in verses 19 and 20: "But his father refused, saying, 'I knew it my son, I knew it. He also [Manasseh] shall be a nation, and he also shall be great, but nevertheless his younger brother [Ephraim, England] shall be greater than he [Manasseh], and his race shall be a multitude [or commonwealth] of nations, and when blessing in that period they shall say, "The Blessing of Israel be upon you! May God make you like Ephraim and like Manasseh," and they will place Ephraim above Manasseh.'"'

These two boys were brothers, and the nations springing from them are still and always will be called Brother Jonathan and Brother John or John Bull. One has grown into a great nation, just as predicted about the year 1689 B.C., and the other has grown into a multitude, or as some prophets state, "a company of nations," and the headquarters are located in the "isles of the sea," north and west of Palestine, where the prophets

of old said Jehovah would select a place, a sanctuary for them, and where the other nations would afflict them no more, as heretofore, and they never have. Just note those saving words"as heretofore.”

When Israel was on the Continent among the nations, they were subject to invasion by Egyptian, Assyrian, African, Babylonian and Roman Empire troops, but when they beat it aross the English Channel, their island home would be inviolate and they could not be invaded in that manner any more. The Creator took care that the Spanish Armada and other attempted invasions were properly attended to by the elements when their enemies sought to subdue Britain. In like manner Providence has taken care of Old Mother Britain down through the ages, just as the children of Israel were to be taken care of by God that they might carry on His work. They have done it imperfectly, of course, but they have been about as perfect as are you and I and the other chaps making up these nations. But when we get wise as to who we are, what we are, and why we are, we will brush up our imperfections. Just read the 54th chapter of Isaiah and note the last verse:

"No weapon that is formed against thee [Israel] shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord."
