CHAPTER XV.

MARCH 28, JULY 27, Nov. 23.

Our Lord compares the Church to a vineyard, himself to the vine therein planted, individual members of the Church to its branches, and our heavenly Father to the husbandman, who tends every branch, carefully trains and prunes it, and looketh that it bringeth forth good fruit.

I AM the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that

beareth not fruit he taketh

that it may bring forth more
fruit. Now
ye are clean

have spoken unto you.

2 If, called Christians, we lead not Christian lives, we cut ourselves off from the benefits of our Christian

profession.

bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends*, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another. the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it 19 If ye were of

But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin. He that hateth me hateth my Father also. I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

CHAPTER XVI.

MARCH 29, JULY 28, Nov. 24.

'THESE things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. 2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father,

3 Cruelty can never consist with a knowledge of God, who is all mercy and loving kindness.

Under like circumstances, let us remember that Jesus endured patiently the contradiction of sinners; and that as the servant is not above his master, nor the disciple above his Lord, it behoveth us to be resigned and patient, even as He was.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall be speak and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shew it unto you. A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me : and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. 19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? 20 Verily, 20 At first ye will have sorrow; but verily, I say unto you, That when ye find my spiritual kingdom
