they loved Him. There can be no need of going further back. If the latest warnings and examples be forgotten, the earlier can scarce influence us. One thing is certain; that to few so young as are many of those now here, have so many deathbeds and perilous sicknesses been shewn, to prove to them the uncertainty of life, and the nothingness of all it has of richest, strongest, brightest, fairest, to offer us; so many warnings, that all must be a blank, hopes, joys, affections, all that lies without the pale of the one family in heaven and earth; to few therefore have so many exhortations been given, to secure the lot and portion of their inheritance in it.

But it is time to conclude.

Losing almost sight for the occasion of the strictness of God's justice, and the terrors of His judgments, as motives to obedience, I have endeavoured to set Him. before you as Love; and, being Love, as not only calling on us to love Him because He loveth us, declaring Himself

our Father, giving us Christ our Saviour for Brother, and the Holy Ghost for our Comforter and Friend, but as drawing us to Himself with "the cords of a man," by motives derived from those best and dearest affections which are constituents of our nature; so sanctioning them by His law, that the sternest sounding of the Ten Commandments is, in fact, based upon them; so urging us by them to love Himself, as to have given us among His promises a pledge of their perpetuity and their perfection hereafter. Let me add,

that, as regards ourselves, by bringing us here together, literally into one earthly family, and binding us together in one and the same high calling to His special service, from far distant homes, and different climes and tongues, He surely sends another special call to us, to realize all that is comprised in the idea of that one family."
