STOWE GARDENS.

CA·

I found anone a delectable place
That was beset with treis young and olde,
Whese namis here for me shall not be tolde,
Amidde of whiche there stode an herbir grene

That benchid was with colors new and clene.---Chaucer.

Lo how the seson of the yere and Averell shouris
Doith the bushis burgyn out blossoms and flouris
Lo the pryme rosis how freshe they ben fo sene!
And many othir flouris among the grasis grene,
Lo now they spryng, and sprede, and divers huet
Beholdith, and seith both rede, white, and blue?
That lusty bin and comfortabile for mann'ys sight!
For I sey for myself it makith my hert to light.
Now sith Almighty Soveryn hath sent so feir a day,
Let se now, as covenant is, in shorting of the wey,
Who shall be the first that doth unlace his mail
In comfort of us al, and gyn some merry tale.--- Chaucer.
