from that committee having waited upon the Right Hon. the Earl of Liverpool, and the Right Hon. the Chancellor of the Exchequer, they very cordially assented to a proposal for the restoration of the suspended grant.

In the year 1768 his late Majesty George III. with compassionate attention to the representations made to him respecting the poverty of the Vaudois, granted Letters Patent for a collection in the several parish churches in Great Britain, "to enable the Vaudois to maintain their ministers, churches, schools, and poor." A capital of £10,000 was thus raised, and invested in the three per cent. bank annuities; the interest of which has been regularly remitted by the "Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts." Esq., S. Bosanquet, Esq., the Rev. Anthony Hamilton ;— the Treasurer, the Rev. Bewick Bridge;-the Honorary Secretaries, the Rev. William Stephen Gilly, the Rev. James Samuel Pons. The sum of £4741. 5s. 6d. was raised before Jan. 31, 1826, by the efforts of the committee and others, -particularly H. D. Acland, Esq. and Jasper Atkinson, Esq., 1st, for the hospital, &c.; 2ndly, for students; 3rdly, for schools. Subscriptions are received at the following banking-houses,-Messrs. Glyn and Co., Bosanquet and Co., Masterman and Co., Hoare and Co., Herries and Co., Coutts and Co., Drummonds and Co.

(2.) Their sovereign,-the present King of Sardinia,-granted the Vaudois permission, in the year 1824, to solicit contributions in foreign states for the endowment of a hospital. This benevolent enterprise originated with Wm. Plenderleath, Esq. during his residence in the valleys in the summer of 1821; who in the following year remitted the sum of 270 francs, a part of the sacramental collection of the English congregation at Rome. An appeal, founded, on the King of Sardinia's approbation of the object, having been made by the moderator and others; his Majesty the King of Prussia warmly countenanced the undertaking, authorized a collection to be made in the churches of his dominions, and contributed 100 ducats. To that monarch's minister plenipotentiarythe Count de Waldbourg Truchsess-the Vaudois are deeply indebted for his indefatigable exertions on all occasions. Through his kind interposition, the King of Prussia granted the sum of 10,000 francs to be devoted to various benevolent objects, at His Excellency's discretion; and the King of Sardinia allows 500 francs annum to each of the Vaudois per pastors. also been induced, at the suggestion of a benevolent member of the Society of FriendsMr. William Allen-to interest himself in their behalf, and having intrusted Count Waldbourg Truchsess with the sum of 12,000 francs, His Excellency appropriated 4,000 towards the purchase of a house and premises for the proposed hospital. The liberal donation of that lamented sovereign was acknowledged in very grateful terms by the moderator of the Waldensian church, in the following letter:

Dieu nous aime encore,

se sont-ils écriés, puisqu'il incline ainsi vers nous le cœur des potentats et des grands de la

terre.'

Votre nom depuis long-tems, Sire, est prononcé avec repect et admiration par toutes les bouches, mais désormais non contents d'être à l'unisson avec ceux qui vous louent, nous implorerons sur vous les bénédictions du ciel. Vos bienfaits inattendus vont nous aider à poser la pierre fondamentale de deux édifices publics; d'un hospice pour nos pauvres, et d'un temple pour une de nos églises, incapable par elle-même de réparer le sien tombant de vétusté et d'ailleurs défavorablement situé. Monsieur de Truchsess, en ordonnant sagement l'emploi de votre don de mille ducats d'Hollande, en va éterniser le souvenir. Il est digne de se rattacher à celui de mille autres traits de votre bienfaisance. Le pauvre qui entrera dans notre hôpital dira avec attendrissement, Si je suis recueilli dans cet asyle je le dois en partie à Alexandre,' et accompagnera cet hommage d'un vœu pour Votre Majesté. Le fidèle en prière dans le Temple du Pomaret, en presentant à Dieu son offrande dira; Si j'ai pu venir dans la maison de l'Eternel, Alexandre m'en a facilité la voie; Seigneur rends lui au centuple son bienfait.' Ainsi dans le sanctuaire, comme dans la maison de charité, l'on entendra

votre nom prononcé avec gratitude par la génération présente et par celles qui la suivront; et l'on ajoutera; Ce prince qui domine sur tant de peuples, de toute langue et de tout climat, et qui signale son règne par ses bienfaits, a aussi tendu sa main secourable jusque sur les Vaudois; comme chrétien il n'a pas dédaigné de voir en eux des frères; comme pauvres il a voulu contribuer à l'amélioration de leur sort.'
