Then shall the Minister say, (the Congregation rising,) MAY the words of our mouths, and the meditations of our hearts, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer. Then shall be sung the following Hymn : O, HELP US, Lord; each hour of need Help us in thought, and word, and deed, O, help us, when our spirits bleed, And when our hearts are cold and dead, O, help us, through the prayer of faith, For still the more the servant hath, O, help us, Father, from on high; O, help us so to live and die, As thine in heaven to be. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen. Then shall be read a portion of the sacred Scriptures, from the Old Testament; at the close of which the Minister shall say, (the Congregation rising,) O LORD, open thou our lips, and our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Then shall be sung the following Psalm: HAVE mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness. According unto the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions; and my sin is ever before me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts; and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness, that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Or this Hymn: SING We the song of those who stand Around th' eternal throne, Of every kindred, clime, and land, A multitude unknown. Life's poor distinctions vanish here; Toil, trial, suffering still await On earth the pilgrim's throng; The church triumphant's song. Then hallelujah! power and praise Or this: 'Tis God the Spirit leads In paths before unknown: The work to be performed is ours; Assisted by his grace, We still pursue our way, And hope at last to reach the prize, 'Tis he that works to will; 'Tis he that works to do: His is the power by which we act; Then shall be read a portion of the sacred Scriptures, from the New Testament; at the close of which the Minister may say, Now unto the King, eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be all honor and glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
