Excerpt from The Ridpath Library of Universal Literature: Twenty Five Volumes; A Biographical and Bibliographical Summary of the World's Most Eminent Authors, Including the Choicest Selections and Masterpieces From Their Writings, Comprising the Best Features of Many Celebrated Compilations

Though the title Of each Selection has been written with a view to suggesting the tenor of the article, it frequently transpires that the heading (often the author's own and selected at his caprice) indicates neither the character Of the writing nor the subject treated. The editors thought it expedient therefore to further set forth the titles to the prose selections in an Analytical Index, wherein the selections are grouped under several general headings, to indicate either the subject-matter or the rhetorical character of the writ ings. In arranging the index to the selections Of poetry, in which the work is exceptionally rich, the reader will find verses suitable for quotation on various occasions and on the subjects usually sung Of by the bard, such as Love, Patriotism, Death, etc.
