Professor, omni tempore admissionis, tenebitur sustinere antedictum domicilium, in omnibus punctis, suis propriis sumptibus et expensis, sicuti appretiabitur illi tempore sui introitâs; et ad hunc effectum, statuitur ut dictum domicilium visitetur per moderatorem presbyterii Aberdouensis, ministrum Veteris Aberdonensis, et primarium dicta Academiæ et Universitatis, unoquoque biennio, ut nulli afficiatur detrimento, et secundùm eorum visitationem professor tenebitur et astringetur restituere idem ad eundem statum in quo repertum fuit, si ullo afficiatur detrimento; et hoc sub pœnâ deprivationis. (22.)—An Ordinance for the better Support of the Universities in Scotland, &c.-Sth Aug. 1654. His Highnes the Lord Protector, taking into consideration the great advantage which may redound to the people of this commonwealth, inhabiting in Scotland, that the Universities there should receive both countenance and encouragement, and be provided for with competent maintenance for the members of the said Universities, for the better training upp of youth in piety and good litterature, Doth ordaine, and be it ordained by his Highnes, by and with the consent of his Councell, that the superiorities of all and singular the lands belonging to the late Bishoprick of Galloway, Abbacy of Tungland, Priory of Whitehorne, and Abbacy of Glenluce, and all other lands annexed and appertaining to the said Bishoprick, together with all ffeu-fermes, ffeu-duties, kaines, customes, and casualties thereunto belonging, accrewing, or which shall accrew; as also the superiorities of the haill teinds, parsonage and viccaridge, teind-duties, and all other duties of all and sundry the churches and parishes of and belonging to the said late Bishoprick, Abbacy, or Priory, wherever the same lye, and by whatsoever name or designation the same be knowne (excepting the superiority of the Deanery of the Chaplin of Striveling), Be and are hereby, and shall from henceforth be adjudged, deemed, and taken to be given, graunted, doted, mortified, and disposed to the University of Glasgow, and the Principal, Professors, and Regents thereof, and their successors for ever, with power to the Principal, Professors, and Regents of the said University, present and in tyme to come, and their successors, to receive resignations, enter the ffeu-holders, tenants, and all others formerly called vassalls of the said late Bishoprick, Abbacy, and Priory, to their respective lands, by charters of resignation, confirmation, or otherwise to compound, transact, and receive fines and compositions for the same, and to do all and every other act and thing touching the same, as any superior or over-lord in Scotland may doe to their tenants and ffeu-holders, or others commonly called vassalls, according to law. And be it farther ordained, by the authority aforesaid, That for the better encouragement of Students in the said University, the sume of two hundred marks sterling yearly shall be paid out of the first and readiest of the customes of Glasgow, to the Principall, Professors, and Regents of the said University of Glasgow, and their successors for ever, or such person or persons as they shall from tyme to tyme appoint to receive the same, to be employed by them and their order for the education of pious and hopefull young men, and Students of Theologie and Philosophie, in the said University; and that the collectors and receivers of the said customes, for the time being, sall pay the said yearly sume of two hundred marks sterling, by quarterly payments accordingly, and shall be allowed the same upon their accompt,-the first payment to be made at or upon the first day of December next. And be it further ordained, by the authority aforesaid, that the superioritys of the lands belonging to the late Bishoprick of Aberdeene (that is to say), the superiorities of the lands of Aberdeene, formerly called the Barony of Aberdeene, of the lands of Murchill, Fetternell, Clet, Tallienessell, Daviot, Reine and Birse, all lying within the sheriffdome of Aberdeene; as also the lands of Fordice and Murtlauch, lying within the sheriffdome of Bamffe, together with the superioritie of the Acres of Old Aberdeene, and of all other landes, tenements, houses, with the appurtenancies formerly belonging to the said late Bishopprick of Aberdeene, the ffeu-ffarmes, ffeu-duties, kaines, customes, casualities, teinds, parsonage and viccaridge teinds-dutyes, and all other duties of the lands, churches, and parishes aforesaid; together with other duties of the church of Maucher and Nicholas, and of all other kirkes and parishes which formerly belonged to the said Bishoprick; together with the tenths of the salmon-fishing, and other fishings upon the waters of Dee and Done, or on the sea, or any other places formerly belonging to the said Bishoprick; together with the whole fruits, teinds, church-rents, and other duties any way belonging to the temporality or spirituality of the said Bishopprick, Be given, granted, doted, and mortifyed to the said University of Aberdeene, the Principalls, Professors, Regents, and remanent members thereof, and their successors for ever, in manner following (that is to say), to the Colledge of Old Aberdeene two parts in three to be devided; and to the Colledge of New Aberdeene one-third part in three to bee devided; with power to the Principall, Professors, Regents, and remanent members of the said University, according to their proportion and division aforesaid, present and to come, and to their successors for ever, to receive resignations, enter the feu-holders, tenants, and all others formerly called vassalls of the said Bishopricke lands and other the premisses, by charters of resignation, confirmation, or otherwise; to compound, transact, and agree about the fines and compositions due for the same, and to receive and take upp the same, and to doe all and every other act and thing therein that any superior or over-lord in Scotland may doe to their feu-holders, tenants, and all others, commonly called vassalls, according to law in such cases: And in respect of the incompetency of the maintenance of the Masters, Professors, and other the members of the said University, and especially of the said Colledge of New Aberdeen, Be it ordained, by the authority aforesaid, that the sume of two hundred marks sterling by the yeare, out of the first and readiest of the customes of Aberdeen, shall be from henceforth paid unto the Principall, Professors, and others the members of the said University, and their successors for ever, or to such person and persons as they shall from tyme to tyme appoint, to be paid quarterly, by even and equal portions, to be imployed for the augmentation of the provisions and maintenance of the Principalls, Professors, Regents, and remanent members of the said University of Aberdeene, in manner following (that is to say), two parts thereof to the said Colledge of New Aberdeene, and the other third part to the Colledge of Old Aberdeene; and that the collectors and receivers of the said customes, for the time being, shall pay the same accordingly, provided alwaies that the Principalls of either of the said Colledges shall have twice as much added to their provisions out of the said augmentation or yearly sume, as is added to the provision of other Professors and mem

Whereas his Highnesse, the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the dominions therunto belonging, by an ordinance entituled, "An Ordinance for the better support of the Universities in Scotland, and encouragement of publique preachers there," hath enacted and ordeyned, that for the better encouradgement of Students in the Universityes of Aberdeene, that the summe of two hundred marks sterlinge by the yeare, out of the first and readyest of the customes of Aberdene, shall bee from henceforth payd unto the principalls, professors, and other the members of the sayd Universitie of Aberdeene, and theyr successors for ever, or to such person or persons as they shall from time to time appoint, to be payd quarterlie by even and equal portions, to be employed for the augmentation of the provisions and maintenance of the principallis, professors, regents and remanent members of the said Universitie of Aberdeene, in manner followinge, that is to saye, two third parts thereof to the Colledge of New Aberdeene, and the other third part to the Colledge of Ould Aberdeene, and that the collectors and receivers of the said customes, for the time beinge, shall paye the same accordinglye, the first payment to bee made at or uppon the first day of December next ensuinge the date hereof, and soe from thenceforth quarterlye, by even and equall portions.

By virtue of which Ordinance, wee doe hereby give power and authoritye to you, and doe hereby require you, from time to time (out of the first and readiest of the moneyes you shall receave for the customes of Aberdeene) to paye or cause to bee payd to the principalls, professors and regents of the University of Aberdeene, and theyr successors, or to such person or persons as they shall appoint to receave the same, the yearlye summe of two hundred marks sterlinge, wherof two third parts to the principall, professors, and regents of the Colledge of New Aberdeene, and the other third part to the principall, professors, and regents of the Colledge of Ould Aberdeene and theyr successors, or to such person or persons as they shall appoint to receave the same, by quarterlye payments, to bee by them employed as in the sayd ordinance is provyded, wherof the first payment to be made at or uppon the first day of December next ensuinge the date hereof, and soe quarterlie, in even and equall portions; provyded always, that from time to time you take a receipt of the principalls, professors, and regents of the sayd Universitie (or of such person or persons as they shall appoint to receave the same) for all such summe or summes of monye as you shall paye to them by vertue of this order; and for your soe doeing, this, with theyr receipts, shall be your sufficient warrant.-Given under our hands att Leith, the 2d of September 1654. (24.)-Charter of Mortification in favour of the University of Aberdeen, of Superiorities, Lands, Teinds, &c., formerly belonging to the Bishoprick of Aberdeen, &c. Dated 18th June 1658. Oliver, by the grace of God, Lord Protector of the Comonwalth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and domineones thereto belonging, To all men to whose knowledge this oure present Chartour sall come, Greetting: Be it known that We, by and with the consent of our Council, by ane act of the eighth of August, One thousand sex hundreth fiftie-four years, did grant, mortifie, and dispone, to the Universitie of Aberdene, and to the principall, professors, regents, and remanent members thereof, and their successors for ever, according to the divisione exprest in the said act, all and sundrie the superiorities, lands, teynds and others under repeitted: And We understanding that it is most necessarie to have the afoirsaid grant in there favors past under our Great Seall of Scotland, that Infeftment and Seasing may pas thereupon, in manner underwritten: Therefore We, with consent of the Commissioners of our Excheker, have given, grantit, disponed, and be this our present Chartour dotted and mortified, likeas wee, be the tenor thereof, give, grant, dispone, and for us and our successors perpetuallie dote and mortifie, to the said Universitie of Aberdene, and to the principall, professors, regents, and remanent members thereof, and to their successors for ever, according to the divisione of the afoirsaid act, viz. To the Colledge of Old Aberdene two pairts in thrid to be divyded, and to the Colledge of New Aberdene, one third pairt in thrie to be divydit, All and sundrie the superioritie of the lands belonging to the late Bishoprick of Aberdene: That is to say, the superioritie of the lands of Aberdene formerly called the Baronie of Aberdene, off the lands of Murthill, Fetterneir, Clett, Tillienessill, Daviote, Rehne and Birsse, all lyand in the sherrefedome of Aberdene; as also, the lands of Fordyce and Murtlauch, lyand within our shirrefedome of Bamff; togither with the superioritie of the Aikers of Old Aberdene, and of all other lands, tenements, and housses, with the pertinents, formerlie belonging to the late Bishoprick of Aberdene; the few-ferms, few-dueties, kaynes, customes, casualties, teynds, personage and vicarage teynd-dueties, and all other dueties of the lands, churches, and parochs afoirsaid; together with the other dueties of the church of Machir and Sanct Nicolas, and of all other churches and paroches which formerlie belonged to the said Bishoprick; togither with the teynds of the samond-fishing and other fishings upon the waters of Die and Don, or on the sea or any other places formerlie belonging to the said Bishoprick; togither with the haill fruits and teythes, church-rents, and all other dueties anywise belonging to the temporalitie or spiritualitie of the said Bishoprick: With power to the saids principalls, professors, and regents, and remanent members of the said Universitie present and to come, and there successors for ever, according to the divisione afoirsaid, to receave resignationes, enter the few-holders, tennents, and all others formerlie called the vassalles of the said Bishoprick lands and others, be due chartours of resignation, confirmation, or otherwayes; to compone, transact, and aggrie anent the fynes and compositions due for the same, and to receave and uptak the same, and to do all and sundry other acts and things therein that any Superior or Over-Lord in Scotland may do to the few-holders, tennents, and all others, formerlie called the vassalles, according to the law in such cases. of the customes of Aberdene, to be employed for augmentation of the provisiones and mantenance of the saids principall, professors, regents, and others members of our said Universitie, in manner following: To witt, two pairts thereof to our Colledge of New Aberdene, and the other thrid pairt thereof to the Colledge of Old Aberdene; with provisione, that the principalls of the said Colledges sall have Appendix, Part I. twyce as much augmentatione of the said yearlie summe added to there provisiones, as is added to the provisiones of the professors and remanent members of our saids Colledges: Moreover, Wee will and grant, and for us and our successors decernes, declaires, and ordaine, That ane Seasing now to be taken be the saids principalls and others members of our said Universities, at the principall gates of the same, sall stand valid, and be ane sufficient seasing to them and their successors in all tyme comeing, for the haill superiorities, lands, teynds, few-dueties, and others above exprest, without any other particular Seasing to be taken thereanent, notwithstanding the samyne lie not contigue, but in divers pairts and places: Whereanent wee have dispenced, and be this our present Chartor, for us and our successours wee do dispence for ever. And lykewayes, wee ordaine our others letters of horning to be direct upoun ane simple charge of ten days, against all and sundrie the heritors, fewars, liferentars, titulars, tennants, tacksmen and others lyable in payment of the saids few-dueties, rents and casualties of the foirsaids lands and others belonging to the said late Bishoprick, and against our customers of Aberdene, for readie answering and paying the saids dueties and yeirlie summe afoirsaid, ilk ane for there owne pairts, to the saids principall, professors, regents, and remanent members of our said Universitie of Aberdene present and to come, according to the provisione and proportione above written: To be Holden and to be Had, All and sundrie the foresaids superiorities, lands, teynds and others generallie and speciallie above written, of us and our successours in fie and heritage for ever, be all right. meithes and marches thereof, old and divydit, as the samyne lies in lenth and breidth, in housses, biggings, bounds, feilds, mures, marrshes, ways, rods, waters, stankes, burnes, bruiks, medows, pasturs, leasurs, mylnes, multures and there sequelles, halkings, huntings, fishings, peates, turfs, coills, coilheughes, cunyngs, cunynghares, dows, dowcatts, smythes, smyddies, brewhousses, broomes, wodes, forrests, shawes of wodes, tymber, quarries, stane and lyme, with free ish and entrie, and with all and sundrie others liberties, commodities, proffits, easments and righteous pertinents thereof whatsomever, als weill not named as named, als weill under as above the earth, farr and neir, belonging to the superiorities, lands, teynds and others particularlie above written, whatsomever manner of way in tyme coming, frielie, quyetlie, fullie, honourablie, weill and in peace, but any revocatione, contradictione, impediment or obstacle whatsomever: Rendering and paying therfore yearlie to us and our successours, the summe of ten shillings money, and that for all other duetie or due service that can anywise be requyred forth thereof: Attour to our Shirreffe of Aberdene and his deputts, and als to or any of them, conjunctlie and severallie, our shirreffs in that pairt of our said sherrefedome of Aberdene speciallie constitute, Greeting: Wee comand and charge that ye give heritable State and Seasing to the saids principall, professors, regents, and others members of our said Universitie, or to there certane actornay, bearrer heirof, and of our chartour above writtin, of all and sundrie the foirsaids superiorities, lands, teynds and others speciallie and generallie above specified, lyand respective as said is, conforme to the tennour heirof, and of our Charter above written, in all poynts without delay; and this on nae wayes ye leave undone; the whilk to do, wee commit to you or any of you, our Shirreffes in that pairt of our shirrefedome of Aberdene, conjunctlie and severallie, as said is, our full power be thir presentes and our Chartour above written. (25.)-Act of Parliament, confirming Rights, Mortifications, &c. of College.-Dated 22d Aug. 1670. At Edinburgh, the twenty-twa day of August one thousand six hundred three score and ten years: Our Soverane Lord and the Estaits of this present Parliament, remembering and calling to mind the many acts of parliament be his Majestie's predecessoris, of worthy memorie, in favour of the auld universities of this realm, whilks are the seminarys of the kirk and policie within the same: And his Majestie being moved with fervent zeal of the propagation and advancement of religion, and with an earnest love of increase of policie, and having therewih an special regard to the education and upbringing of the youth in this kingdom in piety and learning, and specially within the north parts of this realm, whereof our Soverane Lord's University and King's College in Auld Aberdene, has been special instructor for the space of eight score eighteen years or thereby, since the first foundation of the samin: And understanding that the said University and College was of old founded and erected be umquhile King James the Fourth of worthie memorie, for serving the north parts of this realme, and endowed by him with most ample privileges of teaching and professing Divinity, Canon and Civil Laws, Medicine, Philosophy,and all other lawful facultys and liberal sciences, and also giving of Degrees, Bacallaureat, Licentiat, and Doctorat, to those that are worthy and capable of the said Degrees, in all and sundry the Facultys and Sciences above expresst; with full power and liberty to the persons promotit and graduatit in the samyn, to reid, teich, do and exercise all things whatsomever the persons promotit to the same degrees within the University of Paries, in the University of Bononia, or any other University whatsomever, may do or exerce, both in the University where they received their degrees, and also in whatsomever other University ubicunque terrarum absque alio examine vel approbatione; and generally, with all and sundry whatsomever other rights, privileges, liberties, immunities, and exemptions, given and grantit to the saids University of Paris and Bononia, or to any other University of this realme, or pertaining and belonging to any other University or general study: Togidder with Conservatorys specially ordaint and constitute for conserving and mantaining of the saidis rights, privileges, liberties, immunities, and exemptions of the said University and College, as is at greater length exprest and set down in the first foundations and erections of the said University and Kings College of Old Aberdene, of the dates one thousand four hundred ninty-four, and one thousand four hundred nintyseven years respective; and that the said University and King's College of Old Aberdeen were of old giftit and dotit by the said umquhile King James the Fourth, of worthy memorie, and be the Bishops of Aberdeen, and certain others of his Majestie's subjects, with the kirks and benefices, patronages and personages, with the vicarages thereof, lands and annualrents following, mortifeit, unitit, annexit, and incorporat thereto, viz. the personage and vicarage of Abirluthnot, the parsonages and vicarages of Glenmuik and Glengardin, the parsonage and vicarage of Slains, the parsonage and vicarage of Snaw, the parsonage and vicarage of Auchindor, the vicarage of Tilleneslin; together with the patronage of the saids kirks, the half-town and lands of Drumlugus, the town and lands of Adiel, Balmakettil, Collynie, and Andeat, Berrehill, Mundurno, certain croftis and tenements of land lying in the east and west territorys of New Aberdeen, an annualrent of twenty pounds out of the barony Balhelvie, nineNo. IV.

teen merks out of the waters of Banff, twelve pounds six shillings eight pennys yearly furth of the lands of Ord, Moubray, Blair Shinnie, and Pittenbrunzeons in Boyne, an annualrent of five pounds out of Udoch, an annualrent of four pounds yearly out of the lands of Pettie; the lands of the Hospital of St. Germans, with the haill fruits, rents, and dutys whatsomever belonging thereto, wherever the samin bees or lyes within this realme; the lands whereupon the said College is founded, with the yards, crofts, and haill precinct of the samin; with the manses, yards, and crofts of the Canonist, Civilist, Mediciner, and Grammarian of the said University and College, and others particularly specifiet and contained in the old foundations of the saids University and College, chartours and donations of the same, of several dates respective; Whilks privileges and libertys, with the saids old foundations and mortifications, were afterward ratifyed and approvin be umquhill King James the Fifth of worthy memorie, in the year of God one thousand five hundred twenty-seven years, and be his Royal Daughter Queen Mary, of blessed memorie, in the year of God 1562, and be umquhill King James the Sixth, of worthy memory, be an act of his parliament holden in the year of God 1617; and lastly, be his Majestie's umquhill dearest father King Charles the First, of worthy memory, be an act of his parliament holden in the year of God 1633; and likewise that the said umquhile King James the Sixth his Highness' said umquhile gudshir of worthy memory, having consideration and respect that the means of the said auld rents and dutys being greatly diminished and impaired be diverse alienations and impropriations and other dilapidations of the samin, was naways able nor sufficient to entertain in ony competent manner or measor the masters and members of the saids University and College as the samin were first foundit: Therefore his Majestie's said umquhile darrest gudshir of worthy memory, of his Majestie's princely liberality, love, and affection, whilks he had to learning and virtue, and to the mantenance and increas thereof within this realm, gave, disponed, united, and annexit, to the saids University and College of Auld Aberdene, with special consent and assent of all having intrest, the kirks, teinds, lands, and annualrents after specifiet, viz. All and haill the parsonage and vicarage of St. Machar called the Deanry of the Cathedral Kirk of Aberdeen, with the haill lands, teinds, fruits, rents, emoluments, and dutys pertaining and belonging thereto; all and haill the parsonages of Methlick, Furvie, Pitterkirk called Spittel, or the sub-chantory of Aberdeen, with the haill houses, gleibs, lands, rents, and duties of the said kirks respective, all lyand within the Dioceis of St. Andros and Aberdene respective; together with all and sundry kirk-lands, teinds, annualrents, feu-farms, manses, gleibs, houses, biggings, yairds, and others fruits, rents, and emoluments whilks pertaint of before to the Friars Carmalites of Banff, the chaplanries of Wasthall and Fallaroul, the chaplanries of St. Magdalens Altar, with all and sundry kirk-lands, teinds, annualrents, few-farms, manses, gleibs, houses, biggings, yards, and all the other fruits, rents, emoluments, and dutys whatsomever, whilks pertained of before to the said Chaplanries, or to the old Chaplanries of the said Universitys and College of Old Aberdeen; together with all other lands, houses, biggings, provents, teinds, annualrents, few-farms, manses, gleibs, tittles, richts, jurisdictions, and others quhatsoever pertaining and addebtit to the said College, masters, regents, bursars, and members thereof, either given and grantit be his said Highnes' umquhile dearest gudshir King James the Sixth, of worthy memory, or any others his Highness' most noble progenitors and predicessors, kings and Queens of Scotland, their Regents or Governours for the time, or be the Bishops of Aberdeen, of good memory, or be any others at any time of before, whilks the saids College and University possess, has possessed, or any ways might possess, as in his Highness' said umquhile dearest gudshir, of worthy memory, his donations, gifts, and dispositions and mortifications thereof, at more length is contained: Whilks last mortifications and donations, granted by this Hienes' said umquhile dearest gudshir, of worthy memory, to the saids University and College, were likeways ratifyed be him in an act of his said Parliament, holden in the said year of God 1617; and also be his Majestie's said umquhill dearest father Charles the First, of happy memory, be an act of his said Parliament holdin in the said year of God 1633: And our Soveraign Lord, following the worthy example of his Highnes' most noble progenitors in their guid affections and love of learning and virtuous education of the youth within the kingdom, and being willing be all means possible, sua far as lyes in his Majestie's power, to promove virtue, advance the saids University and College of Old Aberdeen, and corroborat the rights, tittles, and securitys thereof, sua that the samin may the more and more floorish in learning, discipline, and good manners: Therefore our said Soveraign Lord, with advyse and council of the saids Estates of Parliament, ratifys, allows, and approves, and for his Hienes and his successors perpetuallie confirms all and sundry the forsaids auld foundations of the said University and College of Auld Aberdeen, with haill rights, tittles, privileges, immunitys, exemptions, jurisdictions, freedoms, and libertys of the samin; and all and haill forsaids donations and mortifications of kirks and benefices, patronages, parsonages, and vicarage thereof, lands, feu-farms, annualrents, and whatsomever other emoluments and dutys given and granted to the saids University and College, either be his Highness' said umquhile dearest father or gudshir, of worthy memory, or any others his Highnes' most noble progenitors, Kings or Queens of Scotland, their Regents or Governours for the time,' or be the saids Bishops of Aberdeen, or any others, in all and sundry the heids, points, articles, clauses, circumstances and conditions therein contained, and after the forms and tenors, in all points: And wills, grants, and declares that the said University and College shall enjoy the samin, intromit with and uplift the haill lands, teinds, fruits, rents, annualrents, chaplanries, and others quhatsomever above specifiet, pertaining and belonging thereto; and also all other priviliges, immunitys, freedoms, and exemptions whilk at any time the said University and College, or any other University or College within or without this realme bruiks and enjoys, or has bruiked and enjoyt in any time bygone, or may bruik and enjoy, by virtue of their rights and donations grantit unto them heretofore; and that the forsaid ratification of the saids rights, specially and generally above written, shall be of alse great strength, force and effect, as if the said haill rights were all at length specially and particularly therein contained and insert, notwithstanding the samin be not sua done: Whereanent, and with all other objections, deffects and imperfections (if any be), our said Soveraigne Lord and Estates of Parliament dispenses for ever: And because the Deanry and Sub-Chantory of Aberdeen, with the parsonage of Methlick, are united, annexit, and incorporat to the saids University and College, the saids kirks and parsonages being benefices and members of the chaptor of the Cathedral Kirk of Aberdeen, and his Majestie being naways willing that the said chapter be hurt, impairit, or deprivit of any of the old members and priviliges therof; Therefore our said Soveraign Lord, with advyse and consent forsaid, ratifys and approves the statute and ordinance made be his Hignes' Royal gudshir, of glorious memory, in the said Parliament holdin at Edin'. the said year of God 1617, ordaining that the Principal of the said College for the time should, in all time thereafter, be Dean of Aberdeen, and that the Sub-Principall of the said College should be Sub-Chantor of Aberdeen, and that the eldest Regent of the said College should be Persone of Methlick, they representing at the leist the said chanons, and having their places in
