false feelings to promise to enter none but a Church of England. If God has endowed us with intellect, He has given it for something, not to go round and round like a donkey turning a machine, and which monotonous performance, it has been said, will eventually turn the animal blind. So shall we be, if we too go in a beaten groove, till it gets so deep by constant treading, and we so old we cannot get out of it. Let us therefore frustrate such an issue by teaching our sons and daughters to read, think, act and believe for themselves, independent of any particular tenets, and with a horror of the Jesuitical sophistry of both Romanist and Ritualist sacerdotalism.

Before quoting in the next chapter the two doctrines, or rather the one and the imitation of it, it should be pointed out that, as to the Real Presence, it is urged from the pulpit that it is only spiritually that the bread and wine becomes Christ's flesh and blood, and that of course, as our eyes and senses tell us, it remains outwardly unchanged, and hence the difference between Anglican "Presence and Roman "Transubstantiation"; whether their books keep to this teaching the reader can see for himself.

To the Blessed Virgin they preach a reverence as to a good and virtuous woman, and as the resting-place of the infant Saviour, but strenuously protest against asking for her prayers. The quotations given show the difference between preaching in public and teaching in private.

So as to Saints-they are an example to us as good and holy men and women, but they openly tell us they draw the line at praying to them "like the Roman Catholics!"

Comparisons between the Romanist and Ritualist Doctrines, Forms and Ceremonies.

ROMANIST.

Q. 3. "What authority doth the Church of Rome challenge?

A. She declares that she is the Mother and Mistress of all Churches, and that to believe Her so to be is necessary to salvation. Pope Innocent III. thus decreed, as God is called universal Lord, because all things are under His dominion: so the Church of Rome is called Catholic or Universal, because all Churches are subject unto her."-Roman Catechism, with Reply thereto, by Don Rev. J. BELL.

RITUALIST.

"We must believe that our Lord Jesus Christ established a certain Society or Spiritual Kingdom called the Holy Catholic Church, of which He made the Apostles and their successors to be rulers under Himself."

"It is holy, because it teaches a holy doctrine, invites its members to a life of holiness, and because it trains up so many persons who are remarkable for holiness.* These persons we call Saints. It is Catholic, or universal, because it has existed, and will exist in all ages, teaches all nations, and maintains all truth." "There can be no true Church unless it have the three orders of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons." "God has not promised to give salvation to any who are not members of the

There cannot be two Churches, Catholic or Universal, but perhaps the following throws some light on the matter.

"Heresy," in BLUNT'S Household Theology, is defined as a wilful denial of some article of the Creed," p. 188, and Nonconformists appear to be classed as heretics. I have a book containing a collection of statutes showing our former Sovereigns' tender and humane manner of treating heretics by burning, etc., whether Papist or Protestant, viz., PULTON'S Statutes, 1640,

of the E.C.U.C.B.S., and one who signed the petition to be appointed a Confessor), pp. 24 and 25.

This book is evidently for the use of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament; but to continue our comparisons:

Q. 4. What use doth she make of this authority?

A. She requires all persons, upon her sole authority, to receive and believe the doctrines she proposes to be received and believed, and without the belief of which she declares there is no salvation.

Q. 5. Doth not the Church of Rome acknowledge the Holy Scripture to be a sufficient Rule for Faith and Manners?

A. No: for there are some doctrines proposed by that Church as matters of Faith, and some things required as necessary

"We must take care then not to be led astray by false teachers and Dissenters from the Church, but to remain faithful members of the Holy Catholic Church of Christ."-Prayer Book for the Young, p. 15.

"It is the Holy Spirit of God who has given us the Scriptures; the same Holy Spirit opens their true meaning to us, and that only through the Church, which is the temple and pillar of Truth; the Church, by whose means the Holy Spirit has kept and preserved the true letter of Scripture; the Church, which alone has the gift of the Spirit of Truth to interpret it. And, therefore, he who would seek the real meaning of that heavenly Word, apart from its guardian, the Church, will never find it; he who would seek it independently of her, finds a vain delusion instead of the truth; he is misled by the evil one, who knows how to transform himself into the appearance of an angel of light. It was this which all the heretics of old did, pretending to a better interpretation of Holy Scripture than that taught by the Church"-Letters of ST. FRANCIS DE SALES, English Catholics Library, pp. 187-8.
