Each of the three Cantiche ends with the word "stelle." "Perhaps," says Scartazzini, "Dante does so to indicate to his readers what is the ultimate end of his Poem, and to what point ought to be directed the eye of every one who does not ignore its lofty origin and its exalted purpose and aim. With the word "stelle," as the concluding word of his Poem, Dante practically points his finger upwards, and exclaims To Heaven! To Heaven! To Heaven!'"
