Born in Samsun in 1960, Gungor Sobaci graduated from Kuleli Military High School, Istanbul in 1977 and from Ankara University Medical School in 1983. He was then appointed as lieutenant medical doctor in the 7th Army Corps Headquarters in Diyarbakir for 2.5 years. After completing a 6-month advanced English Course in Izmir, Dr. Sobaci undertook 3 months of medical observation at the ophthalmology department of the NATO Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany and then a 3-year residency at the Ophthalmology Department of Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA), Ankara. As a physician, Dr. Sobaci served at Mevki Military Medical Hospital for 1 year and attended GATA as an associate professor in ophthalmology; he advanced to become an associate professor in 1992 and full professor in 2005. In addition to a 3-month course on the use of silicone oil in vitreoretinal surgery under Prof. John D. Scott (Cambridge, UK), Dr Sobaci joined Prof. Stephan Ryan’s group at Doheny Eye Institute, Los Angeles, USA, for a 1-year retina fellowship in 1995. Dr. Sobaci is a member of well-known national and international vitreoretinal societies and has received awards for papers and posters from these societies. His studies focus mainly on eye trauma, age-related macular degeneration, and experimental ophthalmology, including electrophysiology and stem cell research. He has published more than 40 papers in PubMed-indexed journals.
