A Comteffe d'Efcarbagnas n'est qu'une peinture fimple des ridicules qui étoient alors répandus dans la province, d'où ils ont été bannis, à mesure que le goût & la politeffe s'y font introduits. Les roles de la comteffe, de monfieur Tibaudier,. & demonfieur Harpin, font le germe de trois caractéres que les auteurs comiques ont depuis fi fouvent traités & développés fur le théatre: Cette comédie, fuivie d'une paftorale comique; dont il ne nous eft refté que les noms des perfonnages, parut dans une fête que le Roi donna à Madame, à faint Germain en Laye, au mois de décembre 1671. Les deux piéces, divifées en fept actes, fans qu'on en connoiffe la véritable diftribution, y étoient accompagnées d'intermédes tirés de plufieurs divertiffemens qui avoient dèja été représentés devant le Roi.

HE Countess of Efcarbagnas is a fimple Picture of the Follies which had at that Time spread themselves through the Country, from whence they were banish'd, according to the Measure that Taste and Politenefs were introduc'd there. The Parts of the Countess, of Mr. Tibaudier and of Mr. Harpin, are a Sketch of three Characters which other Comic Authors fince have often brought upon the Stage at full length. This Comedy together with a Comic Paftoral of which we have only the Names of the Characters remaining, appear'd at a Feaft which the King gave the Queen at St. Germain in Laye in the Month of December 1671. The two Pieces were divided into feven Acts, but the true Divifion of them is not known: There were likewife Interludes play'd along with them taken from several Entertainments which had before been acted in Prefence of the King.
