The Table following is that of the Helalee or practical year, the Hissabce or Astronomical year invariably precedes it by one day, that is to say the commencement of the æra of the flight, occurred according to the Hissabee or Astronomical computation on Thursday, the 15th of July,* and by the Helalee or practical account on Friday, the 16th of July, A. D. 622. The following is a translated extract from Moolla Ali Kooschee's commentary on the Zeej Ooloog Beg, by a learned native of Bombay: "to find out the day of the weck on which the Hijræ Hissabee year commences, divide the given year by 210, because every 210th year closes on Wednesday, and the next new year commences on Thursday again; and out of the remainder deduct one, for the incomplete commencing year, and the rest divide by thirty: the quotient thereof to be multiplied by five, and the sum total taken down; if there be any remaining years, separate the leap and ordinary years, and multiply the former by five, and the latter by four, and the sum total of both, add to the former sum, and to this again add five mare, divide the amount by seven, and the remainder computed from Sunday, will give the day of the week on which the given year commenced.”—Note, that if you do not add the last five; but only one, being the first day of the Commencing year, and divide it by seven, then compute the remainder from Thursday, and you will likewise find the same day of the week required for the commencement of the given year. According to the oriental mode of calculation the epochs are taken from Sunday, the first day of the Hijræ Hissabee commenced however on Thursday the fifth day, wherefore the five is added as above shewn. TABLE I. The following are the days of the European calendar corresponding with the initial days of the Moohummudan years for the first 1300 Moohummudan lunar years: with the correction of the Gregorian calendar introduced, A. D. 1582. The Moohummudan years marked with an E have 355 days-The European years marked with a star are leap years. If the series of intercalations vary from that above given or fall on the years following, 24, 5th, 7th, 10th, 13th, 16th, 18th, 21st, 24th, 26th and 20th of the cycle of thirty years, the only dif ference will be that the 8th, 19th and 27th years will be one day more in advance, or the initial days of the first lunar cycle occur on the 1st May, 2d January, and 7th October, which differences are accordingly marked throughout with Italics. Further if the series be as above, but the intercalation fall on the 15th year, instead of the 16th, then the 16th will be one day in advance, or begin on the 3d February, which case is marked throughout the Tables with a (+). 1st day of Moohurrum.
