COME, ye that love the Lord,

And let your joys be known;
Join in a song with sweet accord,
And thus surround the throne.
2 Let those refuse to sing

That never knew our God.
But children of the heavenly King
May speak their joys abroad.
3 The God of heaven is ours,

Our Father and our love; flis care shall guard life's fleeting Then waft our souls above. [hours,] 4 There shall we see his face,

And never, never sin;
There, from the rivers of his grace,
Drink endless pleasures in

thee

For the bliss thy love bestows; For the pard'ning grace that saves mo, And the peace that from it flows. Help, O God, my weak endeavour;

This dull soul to rapture raise: Thou must light the flame, or never Can my love be warm'd to praise. Praise, my soul, the God that sought theo,

Wretched wandrer, far astray; Found thee lost, and kindly brought

thee

From the paths of death away: Praise, with love's devoutest feeling, Him who saw thy guilt-born fear, And, the light of hope revealing,

Bade the blood-stain'd cross appear 3 Lord, this bosom's ardent feeling Vainly would my lips express: Low before thy footstool kneeling, Deign thy suppliant's prayer to bless:

Let thy grace, my soul's chief treasure,

HYMN 151.

Love's pure flame within me raise; And, since words can never measure, Let my life show forth thy praise. (III. 1.) LORD, my God, I long to know, Oft it causes anxious thought; Do I love thee, Lord, or no? Am I thine, or am I not?

2 Could my heart so hard remain, Prayer a task and burden prove, And duty give me pain,

If I knew a Saviour's love!

HYMN 154. (L. M.)
Psalm c.

EFORE Jehovah's awful thione, Ye nations, bow with sacred joy, Know that the Lord is God alone; He can create, and he destroy.

2 His sov'reign pow'r, without our aid Made us of clay, and form'd us men; And when like wand'ring sheep we stray'd,

He brought us to his fold agam. 3 We are his people, we his care, Our souls, and all our mortal frame What lasting honours shall we reat, Almighty Maker, to thy name? 4 We'll crowd thy gates with thank ful songs,

High as the heaven our voices raise; And earth, with her ten thousand tongues,

Shall fill thy oourts with sounding praise.

[blocks in formation]

Songs of Praise. SONGS of praise the angels sang; Heaven with hallelujahs rang, When Jehovah's work begun, When he spake and it was done. 2 Songs of praise awoke the morn, When the Prince of peace was born; Songs of praise arose, when he Captive led captivity."

3 Heaven and earth must pass away Songs of praise shall crown that day: God will make new heavens and earth:

Songs of praise shall hail their birth.
4 And shall man alone be dumb
Till that glorious kingdom come?
No;-the church delights to raise
Psalms and hymns,and songs of praise.
5 Saints below, with heart and voice,
Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above.
6 Borne upon their latest breath
Songs of praise shall conquer
Then, amidst eternal joy,
Songs of praise their powers employ.

death;

FATHER, whate'er of earthly bliss
Thy sov'reign will denies,
Accepted at thy throne, let this,
My humble pray'r arise-

2 Give me a calm and thankful heart,!
From every murmur free ;
The blessings of thy grace impart,
And make me live to thee:

3 Let the sweet hope that thou are
mine

My life and death attend, Thy presence through my journey shine,

And crown my journey's end.

HYMN 157. (L. M.)

2 Brought safely by his hand thus fai
Why wilt thou now give place to fear?
How canst thou want if he provide,
Or lose thy way with such a guide?
3 When first before his mercy-seat,
Thou didst to him thy all commit;
He gave thee warrant from that hour,
To trust his wisdom, love, and power
4 Did ever trouble yet befall,
And he refuse to hear thy call?
And has he not his promise past,
That thou shalt overcome at last?

5 Though rough and thorny be the road,

It leads thee home apace to God;
For heaven will make amends for all.
Then count thy present trials small,

IN AFFLICTION.
HYMN 158. (C. M.)

HEAR, gracious God! my humble

moan,

To thee I breathe my sighs; When will the mournful night be gone When shall my joys arise?

2 Yet, though my soul in darkness Thy promise is my stay; [mourns, Here would I rest till light returns: Thy presence makes my day.

3 Come, Lord, and with celestial peace

Relieve my aching heart;
O smile, and bid my sorrows eease,
And all their gloom depart.

4 Then shall my drooping spirit rise,
And bless thy healings rays,
And change these deep complaining
For songs of sacred praise. [sighs

HYMN 159. (II. 3.)
Psalm xlii. 1-5.

AS, panting in the sultry beam,

The hart desires the cooling
stream,

So to thy presence, Lord, I flee,
So longs my soul, O God, for thee;
Athirst to taste thy living grace,
And see thy glory, face to face.

2 But rising griefs distress my soul, And tears on tears successive roll; For many an evil voice is near,

BE still, my heart! these anxious To chide my wo and mock my fear;

view,

And days are dark, and friends are
few,

On him I lean, who, not in vain,
Experienc'd ev'ry human pain;
He feels my griefs, he sees my fears,
And counts and treasures up my tears.
2 If aught should tempt my soul to
stray

From heavenly wisdom's narrow way,
To fly the good I would pursue,
Or do the ill I would not do;
Still he, who felt temptation's pow'r,
Shall guard me in that dang'rous hour.
3 When vexing thoughts within me
rise,

And, sore dismay'd, my spirit dies;
Then he, who once vouchsaf'd to bear
The sick'ning anguish of despair,
Shall sweetly soothe, shall gently dry
The throbbing heart, the streaming

eye.

4 When sorrowing o'er some stone bend,

And from his voice, his hand, his smile,
Divides me for a little while;
Thou, Saviour, seest the tears I shed,
For thou did'st weep o'er Laz'rus |
dead.

5 And, oh! when I have safely past
Through ev'ry conflict but the last,
Still, still unchanging, watch beside
My bed of death-for thou hast died:
Then point to realms of endless day,
And wipe the latest tear away.
HYMN 161.
(L. M.)
Sanctified Affliction.
LORD! unafflicted, undismay'd,
In pleasure's path how long I
stray',

But thou hast made me feel thy rod!
And turn'd my soul to thee, my God.
2 What though it pierc'd my fainting
heart,

I bless thy hand that caus'd the smart
It taught my tears awhile to flow,
But sav'd me from eternal wo!
3 O, hadst thou left me unchastis'd,
And still the snare in secret laid
Thy precepts I had still despis'd,
Had my unwary feet betray'd.
They fix my hopes on thine abode;
4 I love thy chast'nings, O my God,
Where, in thy presence fully blest,
Thy stricken saints for ever rest.

DAILY DEVOTION.

Daily Dependance.

skies,

WHEN, streaming from the eastern
The morning light salutes mine eyes,!
O Sun of righteousness divine,
On me with beams of mercy shine;
Chase the dark clouds of sin away,
And turn my darkness into day.
2 When to heaven's great and glorious
And, mourning o'er my guilt and
My morning sacrifice I bring; [King
shame,

Ask mercy, Saviour, in thy name;
My conscience sprinkle with thy blood
And be my advocate with God.
3 As ev'ry day thy mercy spares
Will bring its trials and its cures;
O Saviour, till my life shall end,
Be thou my counsellor and friend!
Teach me thy precepts, all divine,
And be thy pure example mine.
4 When pain transfixes ev'ry part,
Or languor settles at the heart;
When on my bed, diseas'd, oppress'd,
O great Physician! see my grief,
I turn, and sigh, and long for rest;
And grant thy servant sweet relief.
5 Should poverty's destructive blow
Lay all my worldly comforts low;
And neither help nor hope appear,
My steps to guide, my heart to cheer
Lord, pity and supply my need,
For thou, on earth, wast poor indeed
6 Should Providence profusely pour
Its varied blessings in my store;
O keep me from the ills that wait
On such a seeming prosp'rous state:
From hurtful passions set me free,
And humbly may I walk with thee.

7 When each day's scenes and labours
close,

And weari'd nature seeks repose,
With pard'ning mercy richly bless'd,
Guard me, my Saviour, while I rest:
And, as each morning sun shall rise,
O lead me onward to the skies.

8 And, at my life's last setting sun,
My conflicts o'er, my labours done,
Jesus, thy heavenly radiance shed,
To cheer and bless my dying bed;
And, from death's gloom my spirit

raise,

Who all night long unwearied sing,
Glory to thee, eternal King,
5 I wake, I wake, ye heavenly choir;
May your devotion me inspiro;
That I like you my age may spend,
Like you may on my God attend.
6 May I like you in God delight,
Have all day long my God in sight;
Perform like you my Maker's will:
O! may I never more do ill.

HYMN 163.

Ps. xvi. 9.

AVIOUR! when night involves the skies,

My soul, adoring, turns to thee! Thee, self-abas'd in mortal guise, And wrapt in shades of death for me. 2 On thee my waking raptures dwell, When crimson gleams the cast adorn,

Thee, victor of the grave and hell; Thee, source of life's eternal morn. 3 When noon her throne in light

arrays,

To thee, my soul triumphant springs;

Thee, thron'd in glory's endless blaze, Thee, Lord of lords, and King of kings.

4 O'er earth, when shades of ev'ning steal,

To death and thee mythoughts Igive;
To death, whose pow'r I soon must feel,
To thee, with whom I trust to live.

HYMN 164. (L. M.)
Morning Hymn.

AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun

Thy daily course of duty run; Shake off dull sloth, and early rise To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Redeem thy mispent time that's past;

Live this day, as if 'twere thy last: Timprove thy talents take due care; 'Gainst the great day thyself prepare. 3 Let all thy converse be sincere,, Thy conscience as the noon-day clear: Think how the all-seeing God, thy

ways

And all thy secret thoughts surveys. 4 Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart, And with the angels bear thy part;

Glory to thee, who safe has kept, And hast refresh'd me wnile I slept Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,

I

may of endless life partake.
Lord, I my vows to thee renew,
Scatter my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first spring of thought and
will,

And with thyself my spirit fill.
9 Direct, control, suggest this day,
All I design, or do, or say,
That all my pow'rs, with all their
In thy sole glory may unite. [might,
10 Praise God, from whom all blessings
flow,

Praise him, all creatures here below:
Praise him above, y' angelic host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

HYMN 165. (L. M.)
Morning.

ARISE, my soul! with rapture rise.
And, fill'd with love and fear,

adore

The awful Sov'reign of the skies,
Whose mercy lends me one day

more.

2 And may this day, indulgent Power!
Not idly pass, nor fruitless be;
But may each swiftly flying hour
Still nearer bring my soul to Thee!
3 But can it be? that Power divine
Is thron'd in light's unbounded

blaze;
And countless worlds and angels join
To swell the glorious song of praise:
4 And will he deign to lend an ear,
When I, poor abject mortal, pray?
Yes, boundless goodness! he will hear,
Nor cast the meanest wretch away.
Then let me serve thee all my days,
And may my zeal with years in-
