PREFACE.

THE following pages were written at Paris in the course of the visit there described, which extended from Aug. 2 to Sept. 2, in the summer of 1844, being such a portion of his Harrow vacation as the Author had at his disposal for that purpose. They were sent, in the form of letters, to a female friend, in the hope that they might afford some interest and amusement to her and the members of her family; and by them the letters were imparted, as they arrived, to two other near connexions. On the Author's return, the letters were transcribed, with some additions, in the form of a connected journal, and in this shape the MS. was seen by some other individuals to whose opinion the Author is bound to pay great respect; and by some of these he was requested to commit it to the press. This, however, he was reluctant to do, on account of the nature of its contents, consisting in great measure of records of conversations with private individuals. To that objection it was replied, that the difficulty would be removed by the transmission of the MS. to France,
